Summary
Dean followed after a loud clattering noise, silver knife in hand. That had better be a damn raccoon and not another shifter, because god was he tired.
When he finally found the noise, he thought he recognized the person there. Jimmy, obviously. But it moved, and it moved...wrong. Off. A more telltale sign than they usually gave. Shifters weren't good at remembering everything but they usually managed mannerisms to a T.When he brandished the knife, all it did was smile.
"Hello, Dean."Dean realized this case might take a little longer than he thought. He mournfully erased ‘hot date with a motel bed’ from his mental itinerary, accepting that tomorrow would be another multi-coffee morning.
(In media res. Currently unfinished. Set canon divergent after Dean is pulled out of hell.
An angel still saved him and a man still said yes.
But which was which changed a bit.)Series

The thumping rattles the door. The wall rumbles.
It’s only a matter of time.It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
But it is.It is.

There was a man on a bench who looked tired. He was wearing some garish blue work vest and his face was scrunched up to an almost impressive point. Hair looked like he’s been worrying a lot.
Bad day at work, probably.Or,
Alice doesn’t know who “Steve” is or why he seemed so melancholy, but she talked to him anyway.
He turned out to be one of the more unique strangers she’d met.(Third person. Vaguely takes place during Cas’s S9 job at the Gas N Sip.)

The cake hound ran in circles, stumbling and barking with frosting flying off with every step. It looked at her with a half-wild and yet dopey expression.
Its expression changed when she drew back her bow.
Every Cake has a name. Just like Cookies.

Summary
Dean drives the war rig across the Wastes, once known as Kansas. He's brought in, and brought down, more monsters than anyone else in the Bunker.
But he's starting to realize that the real monsters aren't the ones with fangs, claws, or a taste for hearts.
Maybe he's not as obedient as everyone thinks.
Castiel is Fallen, and in chains. His wings are broken, harvested of his grace. He might be a little mad.
But being a little mad might be the only way he survives.
It might be the only way they all survive.

Bookmarker's Notes
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD FIC BUT PLEASE READ IT BEFORE YOU READ MY BOOKMARK ITS A SPOILER LOL
I’ve seen a lot of interpretations of “endgame cas”. A lot say he should be human, others say he’ll meet up with salmondean in heaven as an angel (thus their souls being just as immortal as him), some say he’s got more grace than before, or less grace than before. My favorite interpretation so far has been him having unreliable grace, gone on certain days and back on others, partly because it reminds me of disabilities—how plenty seem to “come and go” rather than constantly being something obvious from the outside. Ever since I saw a tumblr post (I’m not sure which one but I’ll try to find it) where someone outlined how they DON’T think it’s romantic for cas to give up his grace for Dean because they think human cas is pretty clearly a disability metaphor (being neurodivergent and relating to many of cas’s difficulties with humanity [+ recognizing some other symptoms as familiar even if I didn’t have them myself], I immediately resonated with this), I’ve still had an interest in human cas stuff but can’t help but worry it can be a bit “fix the weirdos so they’re normal by the end” and puts so much onus on the nonhuman characters to fit the others. cas is NOT normal. He’s STILL weird. Sometimes he looks like a suburban dad and other times he’s clearly unusual (I won’t say inhuman because I think he’s plenty HUMAN in many ways but he’s just also NOT). But none of these characters are normal (part of why deancas get along is b/c they’re different but also similar in some ways and that applies to all these weirdos), and I personally think it’s a disservice to them, the people who relate to them, and the concept of found family as a whole to insist on everyone being “normal” by the end every time. It’s similar to my problem with always “pairing the spares” in media rather than just acknowledging that some people can be single AND happy. Of course, these are just opinions.
There are three main types of endings of kinda-fantasy media IMO (to brutally oversimplify), with “escapism fucks hard” being the first (think a lot of kids properties), “some things have changed/become better/become worse” being the middle (like supernaturals canon ending), and “make it as normal as possible” being the third (ala star vs the forces of evil) and none is inherently GOOD or BAD they just all have things to CONSIDER if you feel like watching with your brain on.
(and UH can you tell I made a 48 min long essayish voice memo about this latter topic when applied to Jack kline’s endgame “age” (since I noticed just how little fic has him in his TeenTwentySomething body when compared to toddler Jack because I’m going on a TANGENT)
Anyway. (I’m not actually done but I’m forcing my audhd to move the hell on.)
So. I love this fic. I really do. I had just finished a lovely 21 chapter destiel fic full of pining, angst, and tropes I like (which left me awake at friggin and yet this fic was the one that made me cry the moment the proverbial beat dropped with cas getting his grace back. The almost incomprehensible communication between deancas is SO THEM. I love how much is unsaid and how they’re BOTH shit at spitting out the words. cas’s gardening and metaphors about plants are beautiful. cas being so set in the assumption that he has to Keep Following Dean Everywhere that he’s just ever so painfully and quietly given up a huge piece of himself and will not be taking questions because This Is How It Has To Be. Dean not even considering the idea that they have to be the same as valid for a second made me so happy. It feels so unquestionably supportive in a way I think we all deserve more than we realize. Cas’s long-dormant happiness at being able to take back his grace is so lovely. I love the great descriptions of the things he’s missed, I love that Dean still can’t FUCKING SPIT IT OUT, and I again just love the happiness of not having to act or hide. Cas can spread his wings and they can be together without being forced or forcing themselves into knots just to fit perfectly.
To everyone, including you: let no one ever tell you your grace makes you “not fit”. The people that matter will respond like Dean: “well yeah, of course we’re different. We won’t ever be the same, but that’s fine.”There is no greater warmth than realizing you are weird and I am weird and that’s okay to those who matter.
Hooboy. okay. so that’s not all I have to say and I know that’s insane but along with being Extremely Good this just triggered certain brainworms to take over so. I’m just gonna quit now.
Also I just realized the really good fic I read before this was written by YOU and I somehow didn’t realize so. Yeah you did an amazing job on A Midsummer Night In Vegas you wizard! I prefer canon verse and this sort of thing but really though that was heartbreakingly beautiful too!

Summary
“It frustrates me,” Cas mutters, “how the same sensation can feel sometimes good, and sometimes not.”
Dean’s hand is still rubbing slowly down the length of his spine, like he’s petting the valley between the wings he can’t see. “Well, that’s just par for the course,” Dean rumbles. “Sometimes a body wants touch and sometimes it wants to be left the fuck alone.”
Cas always wants touch. At least from Dean. He doesn’t say so. “It frustrates me how much good and bad I can feel at the same time.”
“Oh, buddy,” Dean says. “Yeah.”
(After the perfect darkness of the Empty, Cas finds the world a little...overwhelming. Dean tries to help.)
