"Childe," comes Zhongli's wonderfully sonorous voice. "I don't believe I tell you often enough just how grateful I am to have you here."
Childe had swallowed hard. What he would have given to hear those words from him. Even knowing how this would end, he cannot guarantee he will not go reckless lengths to hear such sentiments from the god's lips once more, even if he knows them to be but pretense.
His breath hitched as Zhongli shifted so that their sides were pressed to each other. His face was closer now when he turned towards Childe, eyes dazzling as they looked right into Childe's.
Now, Childe is standing much too far away to see if Zhongli's eyes truly had flitted down to his lips as he liked to imagine they had. He watches the scene with bated breath; if he concentrates hard enough, he can almost feel the warmth of Zhongli's breath on his lips once more, the burning of blood as it courses through his veins in anticipation. From the angle he's watching, it almost looks like it happened, with his own back to him and Zhongli looking at him with a gaze so adoring.
A heartbroken Childe goes to the past after the 1.1 fiasco to see if he and Zhongli really had anything. (They did).

Summary
Zhongli has spent his life building up the Liyue Association for the Protection of Indigenous Species (or LAPIS for short), a centre aimed at rescuing and conserving various species of Teyvat's wildlife.
When an injured mer called Childe is brought to the sanctuary after being confiscated from a collector, Zhongli finds himself in a race against time to earn Childe's trust and figure out what is ailing him before Childe succumbs to his injuries.
Slowly, Zhongli reaches up and presses his palm to the glass.
Childe does not flinch, bolt, nor flee. Instead, he raises his hand, close enough now that the translucent silver-grey half-webbing between his fingers becomes visible, the small stretch of skin that reaches between the first joint of each finger, while leaving his thumb free for object manipulation, an adaptation providing the mer both the propulsion power of a marine species, along with the dexterity of a human. He touches his index finger to the glass at the same spot as Zhongli’s, and there they stand, human and mer, a connection as rare and precious as gold dust.

Summary
The buzz of alcohol paints everything a warm, golden glow. Childe never knew a person could look so resplendent simply taking a sip of wine, but the way Zhongli holds himself –with all the elegance of an emperor on his throne–is so jarring that Childe finds himself swallowing hard, even though he had yet to take a sip himself.
Husband, his heart sings. He's my husband.
He jolts as he realizes what he’s thinking. He’s getting too far ahead of himself. He shakes his head, reminding himself with a twinge in his heart that he and Zhongli are not together. The alcohol is getting to his head, letting his thoughts run with his desires and mix them with reality.
He knows better than this; he should be taking more caution with his actions, especially as a high-ranking Fatui official. But as the alcohol in his bloodstream and the god in front of him fills him with a warmth that makes Childe go weak in the knees, all his resolve melts away. In the dim light of evening, Zhongli shines, and Childe thinks of committing him to memory with the touch of his lips.
Childe gets drunk and thinks Zhongli is his husband. He's not (yet).

That’s got to be the weirdest looking dog Ajax has ever seen in his life.
At least, Ajax thinks it’s a dog. It’s got scraggly little ginger tufts of fur around the neck and a strip of wild fur running down the spine like a mohawk, ending in more bushy, fluffy fur bits sprouted at the end of the tail. There are also some sort of strange protrusions from its head, like antlers, or maybe tumours? Fuck if Ajax knows, he’s not a medical professional.
But even with his lack of medical knowledge, he knows the dog-thing is in bad shape; it’s so covered in dirt and blood that Ajax can’t even tell what colour it is beneath all that grime.

And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
