Summary
The red moonlight, filtering through the shattered stained-glass window, fell upon his body like a perverse blessing: his blond hair with reddish highlights accentuated the beauty of that defiant face, his eyes, showing confusion, gazing at the red sky beneath the dome, almost mesmerized, his lips parted so that he could hear his stifled breath, and the light bathed his skin in scarlet reflections, outlining his silhouette against the blood-stained marble. An almost innocent vision, like that of an angel fallen into hell itself.
Wesker observed him with a different gleam in his eyes—not just curiosity, but something akin to fascination.
"Look at that…" he whispered with delight. His footsteps echoed softly, confidently, as he descended from the balcony and walked through the smoke toward the altar. Every meter that separated them seemed to shrink, each of Leon's breaths merging with the distant roar of the flames. "What an irony, isn't it? You throw yourself into the lion's den, and the entire universe conspires to crown you as an offering. Right beneath the red moon...Right where the bride was meant to be."
The last sentence was a deliciously cruel whisper.

In the early spring of 1996, Chris Redfield recieves a voicemail from his former squadmate, who tells him of an opportunity in Racoon City. It offered the job security that Chris had searched for since he was discharged by the Air Force a year prior, so he moves to the midwest to join S.T.A.R.S.. However, after only a few months, an arsonist kidnaps several patrons of the gay bar Moonlight Inn during a fire-induced panic. A lack of interest in RPD for solving the case forces Chris to pick up the slack, and due to the limited help available, he ends up negotiating his freedom with S.T.A.R.S captain Albert Wesker for his help in finding the culprit.

There is a decent amount of homophobia/transphobia in this story as the protagonist is a gay transgender man working in law enforcement in the 1990s. Not only is Chris vulnerable to being outed, but the backstory I've written for him involves gender-related trauma and abuse. If you're sensitive to dysphoria or transphobia, I suggest being cautious.

Standing up on the roof of the warehouse he's been perched on, he realizes just a fraction of a second too late that the roof isn't as sturdy farther away from the walls. He lands on his feet because he isn't an amateur, but breaks something that smells like a wine barrel on the way down. It doesn't look like any wine he's ever seen and he groans, hoping beyond hope for it to be shitty Gotham wine.
By the time he's made it back to the safehouse, he's lost all hope that it might be wine.
