Summary
There are few variables Technoblade cannot premeditate: indeed, the Armed Forces had nearly cleaved through his skull. He lived. He's taken more than he cares to confront. He lives. The good necessitates the bad; therefore, he must persist.
Guilt, vulnerability—he had not anticipated facing.
Following a militant conflict, supervillain Technoblade meets Tommy, by chance, the evening of his eighteenth birthday. Unbeknownst to him, it isn't for the first time.
Disfigured inadvertently by the violence of the Syndicate, the introduction of a young victim challenges the foundation of Technoblade's beliefs.

Summary
No, Coriolanus was not an animal, and he would not use his jaw like one. Lucy Gray may tremble, and clamber, and writhe like a mutt that has gone lame, but he would not forfeit his humanity in desperation.
To snake his fingers around Lucy Gray’s throat, and to purge her from this world: it is all that will quell his uncertainty.
Lucy Gray lived a little life. This, Coriolanus assures himself. There will be no legacy, she will not stanch this wound, and she will never breathe again. Indeed: Panem will persist.
They'll forget her. He’ll forget her.
(But Lucy Gray burns, even in the absence of oxygen. To cauterize a bleed, there must be a flame.)

Summary
Coriolanus has touched many with his hands. He has embraced Tigris, and he has soothed her with circles pressed into her back. They have tied Sejanus' noose. He has washed them, and washed them—and they have done beautiful, filthy things.
Never were they able to hold onto Lucy Gray. And never again will they have the chance.
Snow covers all, and it whitens, neatens with purity. First, it must fall.
(Indeed, Coriolanus learns this. But not before one Lucy Gray.)

Summary
Lucy Gray has been called many things. She has been a poet, and a lover. Once, a Victor. And many times, a songbird.
But never will she be called caged—not again.
Lucy Gray Baird has breathed, and she has choked. No matter, it’s a story she exhales. And it is always, always swept up by the wind.
(Or, Lucy Gray disappears in that very same breeze. She slips, for a moment, between her own fingers, too.)

Summary
As he crosses the vestibule and into the sitting room, it isn’t just the dust that assaults him. Memories come, too, jagged and piecemeal like shattered porcelain. Here, before the hearth smothered by ash, he sat on his grandfather’s knee and learned of Veilfall, the Eight, and the Heartcraft Kingdom’s founding. On the woven rug from Umbraso, now faded and threadbare, he pieced an old Pear Pal back together and made it chirp to life again. And there, by the coffee table leaning heavy on brittle teak legs, he folded his first paper crane, sending it off through the kitchen window bearing the weight of a wish. He can’t remember what that wish was, nor if it ever came true, but he knows that he never stopped believing in the power of wishes while he lived under this roof.
No, he knows precisely when and where the false promise of “hope” finally withered and died for good.

Summary
“Nihachu,” Enyalios replied, a low drawl and not nearly as wary as an injured villain should sound after being cornered by a hero, albeit a retired one. Oh, who was she kidding? It was Enyalios. The Blood God; God of Soldiers and War. “I come in peace. Or well, I guess if I do if you aren’t out ‘ere to capture me.”
Niki studied him, the man who once so thoroughly almost destroyed L’Manburg and their government; who near-indiscriminately wreaked havoc on their city. “I apologize, but it’s a little difficult to believe that, considering your track record.”
“You see, there’s this thing called retirement, which apparently heroes have zero concept of—” Enyalios nearly threw his hands up before realizing he was currently injured, rolling his non-bloodied shoulder instead.
“I would argue otherwise, considering I’m currently retired,” Niki snapped back, head reeling with the whiplash of the conversation.
—
Or: Niki is a recently retired hero from a disbanded hero team, L'Manburg. She never expected how difficult it would be to disentangle herself from that world, especially when she begins a tentative friendship with a retired villain.

Summary
“It was… a long trip, and the details aren’t important. I survived.” Had Kurapika ever thought he’d survive this? Even before he’d created Emperor Time, even before the chain’s blade hovering in his ribcage—he’d always thought his life would be cut short. “When I departed with the Black Whale, did you expect to hear from me again?”
There’s a beat of silence before Killua answers. “Well, yeah. Because you’re good at surviving. You’re strong.”
Or: Kurapika disembarks from the Black Whale while Leorio continues onward for his sake. With his goals met and nothing else in his future, he sets out to reconnect with a couple old friends.

Summary
"Please, why don't you sit? Come see for yourself. You've been on your feet all day." Oito patted the floor beside her.
It was a simple request. And on the surface, Kurapika knew no guile or ulterior motive lurked behind it. Just a mother proud of her child's accomplishments.
