“How ‘bout I make a bet with ya?” Atsumu’s proposition stops him in his tracks.
“A bet?”
“Yeah. If I get a better grade than ya on the exam next week, ya gotta come out.”* * *
Kiyoomi hates college. Not the actual process of going to college but all of the traditional practices about going to college. Namely, he hates frat boy Miya Atsumu who manages to ruin his perfect no-party streak. Kiyoomi also hates how pretty Atsumu is and how he makes him have fun when he doesn’t want to.

Kiyoomi had loved Atsumu long, long before the rest of the universe did; back in their awkward pre-pubescent days when Atsumu’s incubus blood still sat dormant and quiet in his veins, back when Atsumu used to pop the collar of his polo shirts because he thought it looked cooler and grew out his bangs to hide his acne and tried to squash down the thick drawl of his accent to fit in better with the snobby prep kids.
Then Atsumu turned 16 and everything changed.

Summary
Atsumu had been subject to a bunch of frightening things over the course of his life. Watching crimson blood seep out of someone’s neck in uneven spurts and bursts might’ve just taken the top spot, however.
He should’ve known something was off. No normal person acted like that. By the time birds were chirping and the sun was rising, Atsumu hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep.
But he’d looked through all the newspapers he’d read since moving here, instead. And there it was, in bright, bold letters. Suspected vampire activity in the area. He’d brushed it off as nonsense back then. After all, who would even believe such things? Somebody smarter than Atsumu, that’s who.

Summary
In all of his years, Kiyoomi has never once felt that his heart is handled carefully. More often than not, he’s the one cupping his heart into his hands, trying not to let the blood pool over; Kiyoomi’s hands are not careful. Calloused after a lifetime punishing his body through sport. Cracking and dry, jagged skin scratching the velvet surface of the most important muscle in the human body. Hands that send pressurized air bound in leather at eighty-five miles per hour, crumbling every opponent in its way. No, Kiyoomi does not have careful hands, and that fact doesn’t change, even when he’s the one holding his own heart.
A memory surfaces, the last time he had tried to forgo control and allow a helping hand to catch the blood pumping out of his heart, and Kiyoomi is reminded that if his own mother couldn’t carry the weight of Kiyoomi’s soul, that no one else can do so either.
In the closed-off realm of Sakusa Kiyoomi, an olive branch might as well be a bobby-pin trying to pry open a deadbolt, trying to bypass a password.In all of his years, Kiyoomi has never encountered a person capable of succeeding this.

“Come on then, angel,” Miya smiles, just between the two of them, then grabs Kiyoomi around the middle and spins him in circles all around the room, dodging furniture and cheering teammates and dubious puddles on the floor and their own flying feet, laughing. He’s so beautiful. Miya. Ridiculous fucking man. And he looks at Kiyoomi like he thinks he’s beautiful, too, with all of his odd angles and bushy eyebrows and thin lips. Not that there isn’t some sort of charm to that, if you like the graveyard keeper, haunted doll aesthetic, but—it’s Miya Atsumu. Kiyoomi can’t ever imagine someone that fucking radiant and shit with all of his own gloom and doom.

Summary
The breakroom smelled like burnt popcorn.
Not freshly burnt popcorn, either. Old burnt popcorn. The kind that had settled permanently into the walls sometime before Sakusa started at the school and would probably still be there after he graduated. It lingered in the air somewhere between the used coffee grounds the biology department TAs had likely forgotten to dump out and the half-container of soup that had been sitting on the melamine counters long enough to warrant a call to environmental health services.
Sakusa sat at the end of the table farthest from the microwave with his laptop open and a stack of ungraded lab reports beside him. The reports were easier to ignore than the spreadsheet currently glowing on his screen.
Twelve usable participants.
Twelve.
Sakusa brought both hands up to the bridge of his nose, pressing hard enough to leave marks and hoping that if he concentrated long enough, he might somehow alter reality and solve all of his problems at once.

"You fucking suck," Sakusa tells him, then shakes his head. He completely gives up using the wine glass and sips straight from the bottle instead. "Have we talked about frogs tonight? Or ferrets? Lets talk about them, please."
"I wish I were an owl so I could lay eggs," Bokuto tells Inunaki next to him.
"I thought I was talking about fun frog facts," Sakusa cuts in, comically put out.
"Oh. Sorry. Continue."
Atsumu watches Sakusa continue his tangent on frogs. He learns a lot of things while listening to Sakusa's smooth voice, hands gesturing aimlessly as he explains. Frogs are diverse, tailless amphibians, with permeable skin that allows them to breathe and "drink" water directly through their bodies. They are carnivores with teeth, capable of jumping over 20 times their height and using their eyes to help swallow food. As of tonight, Miya Atsumu might be hopelessly more than in-like with Sakusa Kiyoomi. Ah, fuck.
A text from Ushijima on Sakusa's phone leads Atsumu into believing they're dating. Obviously, the only option now is to spend all his time with Sakusa until he realizes that Atsumu's the better option.Bookmarked by cosmiclils
