He had been trying hard to keep Kevin and Jean safe his whole life that running from the nest was more of a hazard than an actual solution. However, when Riko destroyed Kevin’s hand, that had been the turning point for Neil. If he could do that to Kevin, his partner and almost brother, what would he do to Jean and Neil? So, Neil took the beating while Jean took care of the car and drove away with him in his passenger seat.
