Merlin went silent, sitting back and licking his lip nervously, the croissant in his hand forgotten for a moment. “What do you mean?”
“Is this why you don’t sleep or eat?” That made Merlin’s eyebrows knot in confusion. “You’re punishing yourself, because you think you deserve it for not being ‘productive’.”

He hadn’t known. He hadn’t known how good it would feel to hear the front door click closed, the shuffle of tired feet as they toed off shoes by the doorstep. The sound of steps moving through the rooms towards him. The warm feeling that would shake his whole world as arms made their way around his middle, holding him tightly and as if he was made of glass. And a kiss placed on the side of his neck. Warm breath and the words I’m home mumbled in his ear, while he stirred the food on the stove, trying not to break apart like a ripe fruit under deft fingers.
He hummed in response, pressing his back into the warm embrace. He hadn’t known.

“What?”
“What will you give me if I sink her?”
The Captain looked around until he finally spotted the sailor who’d said the words – a scrawny young man with curly black hair. They’d picked him up recently by Gaius’s suggestion. The surgeon had sworn the boy would prove useful with time. The Captain was dubious he’d meant useful in battle. With the pirate ship getting the ropes ready and their disparity in manpower, their fate was sealed. This gangly boy wouldn’t survive the melee. Whatever happened, he’d die.
Not a big loss, the Captain thought.
“If you sink her I’ll give you five thousand pounds and my son’s hand in marriage.”

When he pulled back, Merlin’s lips were stretched into the dopiest smile. His eyes glittering a mix of blue and gold as flowers bloomed slowly around them. Arthur felt the heat rise to his face. He wasn’t sure he would ever get used to the magical outbursts.
“You did it again,” he said, voice just above a whisper, as he looked around them.
Merlin’s eyes faded to pure blue and widened, face painted a red close to Arthur’s own family colour, as he looked around them.
“I’ve got to learn how to stop doing that”
