It is Haymitch Abernathy's 35th birthday. He has watched a boy and a girl from his District die each year for the past 18 years. This year will be no different. He knows it. Nothing has ever changed. Why would it? President Snow will not allow it. He made sure Haymitch knew that when he killed his Ma, Sid, and his girl, Lenore Dove.
On his 35th birthday, the ghosts of Lenore Dove, Sid, his Ma, and Burdock come to haunt him (and help him), but he doesn't want to listen. He just wants it to finally end. Another birthday. Another reaping day. Another two deaths that weigh on Haymitch's conscience. The sun always does rise on another reaping.

The only people who see behind that cold, horrible mask are Lucy Gray Baird and Sejanus Plinth. He wishes they didn't love him. It would only get them killed in the end.

What? A nervous buzz travels through the students. What on earth could that mean?
“Dr. Gaul and I have…collaborated…on a neural networking device that will allow the mentors to be physically aware of their tribute’s wellbeing as you prepare them for the arena. And after.” Highbottom tips his head speculatively. “Tests indicate that this should only be minimally painful.”

They’ve been here before. Coriolanus cradling Sejanus’s face; Coriolanus close enough to share air; Coriolanus holding all of Sejanus’s broken pieces in some semblance of their original shape, saving his life, saving him from himself. They’ve been here before but something feels different this time, and Sejanus can’t fight the realization that perhaps it’s only because his eyes are finally open.
“Why?”
Why record his confession in the first place, he's asking, not why delete it, except he knows he doesn’t want the truth about the first question so he lets Coriolanus answer the second.
