Summary
Ilya didn't know family could be so easy. It surprised him a little at first how quickly Yuna and David seemed to accept him as part of Shane's life. Over the course of that first afternoon meeting, somewhere between standing awkwardly in their foyer and sitting down to eat pasta in the kitchen where Shane spent his childhood summers, they decided if Shane was all in on Ilya, they would be too. Once he moved to Ottawa, they only got closer, until it didn't feel strange at all to show up at their house without Shane, like Ilya was part of the family on his own standing outside of his connection to their son.

Summary
Ilya takes a breath. "Next Wednesday is the anniversary of my mother's death." The words come out rushed, afraid he'll lose his nerve and never say them if he doesn't get them out as fast as possible. "I want to do something."
Shane blinks at him, his face softening into an expression so fond and careful that Ilya feels tears prick at the back of his eyes. "Okay." Carefully, he take's Ilya's hand, their fingers twisting together like second nature. "What do you want to do?"--
Ilya used to spend the anniversary of his mother's death trying desperately to distract himself from his feelings. This year, though, he wonders what it would be like to face them, with Shane at his side.

Summary
For Samira, winter spells loneliness. The days get shorter, the nights darker, the wind colder, and Samira feels it sink into her bones, a chill she can't shake. Work should be enough to distract her. Should be, if not for the reminder of what could have been that walks purposefully through the emergency department, treating her with carefully maintained professional courtesy that stings almost as much as the winter wind. There was a time when stolen glances and gentle words of praise were just as much a part of her routine as charting and ordering bloodwork—something she didn't realize she had come to expect until it was gone.
Now, Dr. Jack Abbot is just another colleague. When her eyes meet his hazel ones, there is no flutter in her chest, no split second thought of those eyes looking at her from the pillow beside her, groggy with sleep. There is only the work, nothing else.

Summary
Dr. Jack Abbot spent the last year moving in a daze, reeling from the loss of his wife and struggling to work through the gaping hole in his life. During that time, a new class of interns started at PTMC. One in particular starts to stand out. She doesn't seem to sleep, doesn't eat, and spends more time in the ED than any resident should be capabale of. As he starts to spend more time with her, he quickly learns there is no one else like Dr. Samira Mohan.
Dr. Samira Mohan is good at reading people's emotions. It helps her be a good doctor, able to sense what a patient needs and offer the right reassurance to keep them from spiraling. When she starts working with Dr. Jack Abbot, she can't tune out the deep well of grief that surrounds him, the loneliness and desperation that seems to follow him everywhere. And she can't help but feel drawn to him, even when it puts her secret at risk.

Summary
To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies aren’t growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin – humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could “hang” with the big guns on the team.
That being said, there’s still some part of Ilya that balks at the request by the gaggle of rookies to watch The Iron Giant, a veritable children’s movie at the team’s latest movie night.

Ilya never texted Shane back. He didn’t call. Twenty minutes turned into two hours, then eight.
Shane had spent that time spiraling. It’s something he hasn’t done recently, at least, not about this. No, up until yesterday he thought his relationship was unflappable, that Ilya was just as happy as he was. Well, as happy as they both could be keeping such a major part of their lives a secret.Every time he closed his eyes he saw the hurt that flashed across Ilya’s face right before he kicked him out.
I already chose you, Hollander.
The words had landed in his gut like a rock. They never discussed the things he’d given up, not because Shane wasn’t, at least peripherally, aware that that was the case. He moved to a new country and signed with a team that was so historically bad they were a laughing stock. One of the greatest players in the league tore up his American visa, sold his car collection, and moved to Ottawa just to be within driving distance of him. Ilya did that to give their relationship a real chance.
Or, Ilya kicked Shane out on Boxing day and now he has to wait two weeks to make things right. Those two weeks are going to change everything.
