He wanted to scream, but no sound came out of his mouth. The fear robbed him of his voice, paralyzed him to a point he could do nothing but take the beating and pray they would stop before it was too late.
And the whole time the only thought in his head was: No one can ever know about this. No one can ever know they're beating me up for kissing a guy.Scott gets badly beaten and ends up in a coma. Kip and Carter are at his side the whole time, sick with worry and forming a deep friendship while they wait for Scott to wake up.

So the thing is, Scott Hunter is not a violent man. And the thing is, Kip Grady knows this. But it's one check, illegal. Another, illegal. A locker room comment that they're targeting him. Another, illegal. There's a stick against his bottom teeth and someone yells "pretending that's a cock, Hunter?" and his gloves are off and his fists are on him.
(Mid-season, Scott gets into a fight during a game because everything that's been happening just boils over.)

“Hey man, did the LASIK already fade? Thought it was supposed to last longer—my sister was thinking about it, and I told her how well it went for you and Jonesy.”
Hunter looks up from the table, confused, “Huh? No, my eyes are great. Still recommend it.”
“Oh, I saw the contact lens solution, and I thought…” Carter trails off. He suddenly realizes he’s prying, something he hates doing in general but learned long ago not to do with Hunter specifically. Hunter opens his mouth and then shuts it. His whole face looks like a rabbit caught in crosshairs.
“I, that was,” he stammers, pauses for a beat. “My cousin visited. Thanksgiving. She forgot hers, and I bought some for her.”

The animals changed over the years, ranging from birds with damaged wings to a three legged puppy from the shelter he volunteered at in high school, but the feeling of needing to protect something so lost and vulnerable never went away.

As far as he’d seen, Scott had never fought over it during a game. Hockey players were, to Kip’s understanding, Neanderthals who were prone to dropping their gloves at the slightest provocation. Scott hardly ever fought anyone, and the bruises he’d borne after those ugly games had been defensive. Instead of fighting, Scott skated harder, played better, scored goal after goal until there could be no doubt as to his skill, his strength, despite…well, despite the other thing.

Ilya knows this is going to hurt like Hell before they even hit the boards. They’re going too fast and neither of them are going to have the time or opportunity to get their legs under themselves to slow down. He hadn’t been intending to crash so violently into Hunter, he’d just not been expecting him to stop where he had, when he had.
Fucking Vaughn had stolen the puck from Ilya just as he was about to tie the score and he’d passed it to Hunter. Fucking Scott Hunter who was then set up perfectly for the easiest breakaway in the history of the sport of hockey. Ilya hadn’t thought, just moved, darting after Hunter like his life depended on it, like his father was still alive to berate him for his failure to do so later over the phone.

Scott Hunter realizes that maybe it's ok to let his friends in a little and introduces them to Kip as his friend who makes him smoothies.
