She laughed into his ear, and he couldn’t stop himself from laughing along.
“Why must you be so crass?” he complained, though between his laughter and the fact he sounded almost a little whiney, he doubted he’d be taken very seriously.
“Oh, sweetiecakes.” She let go of him. “If you think that’s crass, I have some terrible, terrible news for you.”

“I don’t care what you tell yourself,” Rio continues without mercy, as though she hasn’t just pushed a knife into her heart and twisted, “but you’re not a fighter. You’ve stopped fighting a long, long time ago. There’s no strength in staying behind and holding grudges.”
Agatha quirks an eyebrow, feigning amusement, feigning indifference at the words that threatened to boil her alive with their cold poignancy.
“So if you really do want justice? You have my number.”
It’s a dramatic exit, just like all of Rio’s exits before this one. And just like all the others, it leaves Agatha seething, yearning, grieving all at once.
Agatha has given up. On life, on Rio, on avenging the death of her son. She drags herself from day to day, lonely, grieving, haunted by shadows of the past, until Rio barges back into her life and dangles hope right in front of her face. There's a pattern, she claims, a connection between Nicky's death and another medical malpractice case from twelve years ago, and when there's a pattern, there's a murder.
