Summary

Summary
When Charles' master dies, he makes the rash decision to steal Sir Dagfinn's identity to compete for tournament prizes as a knight.
Charles' friends, Monty and Crystal, would be happy to just earn enough coin to fill their hungry bellies and return home to London. Thomas of Anglesey, a poet they meet on the road to Rouen, joins the gang as he needs new stories to tell.
Charles, however, has greater desires: to gain glory and prove that a peasant like himself can change his stars.
There are many obstacles for Charles to navigate: learning to joust, navigating courtly manners at banquets, and avoiding the suspicion and wickedly accurate lances of his fellow knight, Lady Esther.
It is the worst possible time to fall in love. But when he meets a handsome and quarrelsome Lord at a tournament in Rouen, Charles vows to gain his favour and his heart.

Summary
The prospective punter is fit, though. Cool green eyes below dark, thick brows. His swept-back hair loosened, so strands hang over his forehead. He looks like an old-fashioned film star with the monochrome of his dark hair against pale skin.
Charles' usual spiel—"Do like what you see? You can see more if you like…"—dries up in his throat, and instead he blurts out, "What's the word that means a politer word for something?"
The man's mouth opens, closes and opens again. "A euphemism?" The man's voice is posh, but pleasant.
Charles leans in closer to the window and smiles. "Thanks, mate. It was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't get it. You okay? I can help with directions if you're lost."
"I'm not lost," the man says. "I came here on purpose." His voice gets smaller. "For sex."

Summary
Niko Sasaki returns to London in 1919 to become one of the first Woman Police Constables in the Metropolitan Police. She is also desperate to rekindle her friendship with Edwin Payne.
Niko, London and Edwin have all changed drastically in the three years since her father died and Edwin was sent to the Front.
Niko is tasked with an undercover mission to investigate the unlicensed bars of Soho and discover who is supplying them with drugs. However, Niko has her own mission, to find out who killed her father and framed it as a suicide.
Everything would be a lot less complicated if she wasn't falling in love with Crystal, a performer at The Diamond Club.

When Charles is escorted home by the police after a drunken night out, Edwin, his best friend and housemate, agrees to accompany Charles in future.
He almost immediately regrets this.

He opens the front door and sees Charles is there. The two police officers flanking him are a surprise.
“Evening,” the left-hand officer says. He is middle-aged, his brown beard speckled with grey.
The officer on Charles’ right-hand side is younger, fair-haired and clean-shaven. He has his arm looped through Charles’ arm, holding him up rather than holding him still.
“Good evening,” Edwin parrots back.
“Is he yours?”
Edwin nods automatically.
“We found on a roundabout on the main road and thought it would be best to escort him home.”
“I was picking daffodils,” Charles says in the slow, emphatic way of a drunk trying to sound sober.

It’s been three days, and Charles Rowland is dying.
“Will you stop squirming, you little menace,” says Edwin, exasperated. “I’m going to miss your femoral artery and then you’ll be sorry.”
Charles grins. “Oops,” he says. He’s a featherlight, endorphin-flooded creature. It’s hard to feel too sorry. It’s hard to believe that anything bad is ever going to happen again. “Guess you’ll just have to do it again, then, won’t you?”
