A gala for the military is thrown by the king. The scouts are in their best clothes, surrounded by finery far beyond what they’re used to, allowing themselves to be swept up in the revelry of high society for one night. And for Levi, being with the girl who causes him the sweetest pain and cruelest pleasure. The girl who never stays longer than a night, always leaving before the morning light hits, no matter how badly he wants her to stay. The girl who moves as a ghost, disappearing and reappearing at random, leaving him with nothing more than the hope he would one day see her again.

Expecting one of his mildly rude yet playful comments, you’re surprised when he just raises his eyebrows, supporting his face on his interlaced hands beneath his chin. “Two things can be true at once.”
