He can hear the wet noise of it trying to take his muscles hostage, gripping and sticking to the nerves and bone marrow and veins and it hurts and Danny’s bloodcurdling, animalistic scream is just as reckoning and final as the one made in the portal but even with white dots dancing across Danny’s vision there’s a final sharp yank.»

“Val, do it.” She recognizes the popping static of ghost speak. Danny raises his head and the pain in his eyes is gone, replaced with grim, angry determination.
She opens her mouth to respond, but he stops her.
“Don’t reply, just shoot me. If you do it, you’re free.”
He couldn’t survive this. Not unless there's something major he isn’t telling her.
And then she remembers there is.

Valerie and Danny are kidnapped by the GIW due to their anomalous ectoplasmic radiation readings. In the lab, they're put trough testing to determine whether or not they still count as human. Danny struggles with the cost of keeping his secrets to avoid hurting Valerie, while Valerie grapples with the real ramifications of her suit’s technology and how ghostly she's becoming. Together they must both face their truths if they want to get out alive.

He releases a ragged breath in a demented laugh. "They’ve got other ghosts held captive."
She waits for him to finish that statement with a point. He doesn't. The look he gives her, like she's just kicked a dog, isn't appreciated.
"That settles it." He smacks his lips. "I’m going to completely level this place."
She snorts, but he's not laughing. How he intends to keep that promise, she hasn't a clue.

What is an appropriate amount of fear for a human to have in this situation? Either way it's no use, he can’t school his features into anything normal, not with his core growling like a predator. This will be just another anomalous data point in their records. Another failed attempt at torture.

The funny thing about trauma, Valerie thinks, is that you still have to go to school afterward. When her mom died and her whole world ended she was back in class before spring break. When Danny had his accident, he was back a week later.

The blaster’s almost used up now, the cartridge's illumination basically useless, but she can still see the body by it. It stands up to full height, and shuffles. Part of its spine has collapsed, and hangs away from the lower body at a sickening angle. Its glazed white eyes stare, something akin to breath rasping past its shrivelled black gums, and three more maggots crawl from his nostrils. It begins to walk towards her.
And Valerie can’t. fucking. move.

Summary
That should be the end of it. His parents are happy, the portal is working, and Danny doesn’t get grounded for messing around where he shouldn’t be. Case closed, happily ever after, the end, everyone can just move on with their life now and Danny can just bury this incident into the confines of his mind with little to no consequences.
Except…
Well, the memory problems are concerning, but at least he isn’t dead.
