Steve’s startled laugh bounces off the cobblestones. He knows from Bucky’s glower, the color high on his cheeks, that whatever game he’s playing at, Steve isn’t following the rules.
“I’m sorry!” he says, tugging Bucky back to his body. Quieter, with their faces so close, “I’m sorry. But Jesus Christ, Buck, that was a stupid question.”

Summary
In 1918, Bucky is forced to flee New York with his family. In 1923, he returns as a prize fighter, determined to send money to his sisters and stay far away from the gang violence that destroyed their home.

These days, Bucky’s childhood pal isn’t facing down neighborhood bullies. He’s taking on every factory owner in the Garment District—and every gangster they hire to intimidate union members.

“If you’re gonna stand there admiring your handiwork,” Steve says to the construction paper he’s laying over the hardwood floor, “the least you could do is pitch in.”
Bucky doesn’t move from the shadows of the window frame. But Steve can see in the dark, too. Can see his suppressed smile tick, then reset.
There’s a soft whir as he points at the kitchen island, where the granite countertop is cracked down the middle. Then a Steve-sized hole in the living room drywall.
“That was all you,” he says, before picking up a drop cloth off the floor and covering Steve’s couch.

He turned back to look at Steve over his shoulder.
“Just missed you, I guess.”
He was still smiling, but it was the honest kind that grew from both corners of his mouth. Not teasing. The weight on Steve’s chest widened, a familiar measure of dread that lasted all summer, long after the hand-me-down sweater stopped smelling like Bucky.
It really would’ve been easier if he were teasing.
