Usually, Xie Lian is far more adept at repressing such severe reactions, but he whips his head around as if he could find who had spoken despite the fact he knows it had been only for his ears to hear.

Something dark and disarmed flashes in Killua’s wide eyes for a moment, something vulnerable and guarded all at once, but then he simply ducks his head and scoffs.
'Don’t you think that’s a little ridiculous? You don’t know anything about this person other than that they bring you pain. And you’re dedicating your whole life to them. I mean, why do you care about someone who’s caused you nothing but suffering?'
It sounds like Killua was trying to be derisive, but the last few words come out hardly above a hoarse whisper."

Lan Wagnji freezes as the call ends. He waits a full five minutes but Wei Wuxian does not call back and does not text, does not do anything to stop the sudden spiral of Lan Wangji’s thoughts.
Do you mean that? Lan Wangji wants to ask—to plead. Do you love me?
But he can’t ask. Wei Wuxian will have gone to bed by now. Lan Wangji must deal with his racing heart and raging inner turmoil alone.

For each time Aunt Mito had given his hand a squeeze, Killua must’ve had several fingernails torn out, swift and bloody. It leaves such a painful, gaping wound in Gon’s chest, to imagine that Killua only ever knew touch as something that hurt."
Gon comes to a sudden realization about Killua's childhood and, predictably, takes it upon himself to do something about it.

As many times as he can, whatever the cost. He’ll earn this again."
Killua becomes delirious with a high fever, but he isn't subjected to the usual pain and cruelty at the hands of his family. Instead, someone else is here, someone who is very kind and very gentle and very unlike anyone Killua has ever met.
