It was a leather Christmas tree in a shop window. It was harnessed with spiked and silver-bossed straps and garlanded with chains, chains anchored by skull and barbell piercings, dangling with silver rings and strings of beads, and crowned with a chrome, knobbed toy and really, thought Amanda, no.

They eventually made it to the concrete tower block beckoning squat safety. The lift was out of order, so they climbed to the sixth floor, the Earl's laboured breathing echoing in the grubby stairwell. Once there, Klaus automatically gave him precedence at the locked door; when the Earl just stared blankly at it, Klaus blinked, and took out his toolkit. Jimmying the door was not hard, even if his hands trembled ever so slightly. Fatigue, thought Klaus. It'd been a long day.
