On the other side of the locker, one of his buddies rapped on the red steel. Rafe didn’t look away from his belongings, still digging around for the chemistry lab he knew he shoved back here a few days ago. “Sup.”
“Y’know JJ Maybank?”
His hands stilled around a crushed-up packet that looked pretty promising. Did he? The name rang a bell somewhere deep in his mind, like they’d played seven on seven together or went to the same VBS. A wisp of a memory, strong enough to revisit, nothing to hold onto. “I think so?”
“He killed himself last night.”***

The taller man’s eyes drag down his shaking body and back up. Lazy, half-interested. “You’re hard.”
He’s got him there. He was chubbed up when Rafe slunk in the room and hovered behind him. He was fully erect when the first blow landed on his cheek. Now, when he’s under a microscope and Rafe prods at him like a specimen, he’s throbbing.
JJ sputters, grasping for some witty comeback that’ll put him in his place, wherever that is. “You’re— I’m n—”
“Don’t fucking talk,” Rafe snaps, face twisted up in disgust like he’d broken some tacit rule, like he was stupid.***
