Armand stifles a laugh with his hand. Daniel glances over at him, and can’t help softly smiling. Preening. He likes that it amuses Armand when he behaves like a philistine.
”I still fail to see the problem. There is something to be said for preserving someone in the imperfect stages.”
Armand can look so tender when he smiles, sometimes. Butter really wouldn’t melt, when he gives Daniel that shy look from under his eyelashes, like they both don’t know what he’s thinking.

Summary

Daniel’s always known he’ll die alone. The last few years, he’s tried to accept the fact that his death won’t have any dignity to it. He pictured it happening in a hospital bed, or on his couch, toppled over on the street — not writhing on concrete floor, bitten, drained, thrown away like a kid’s juice box. Fifty years since Divisadero and Armand ended up killing him after all, but this time he won’t so much as give him the courtesy to watch it happen.
And just when Daniel figured this to be Armand’s version of a hit and run, he comes back.
