It was just a punch — granted, a punch from a thousand-pound gargoyle, but a punch nonetheless. David’s ribs were well-protected by his exo-frame, and with his rockets powered up, it would be easy enough to shoot backward and steal the power from that punch entirely.
But that’s not what happened. Instead, David’s thumb slipped and the rockets propelled him forward, making the punch all the harder. At the same time, with an unexpected twist of the hips, Goliath planted his feet on the side of the nearest building and kicked forward at a rapid pace, driving his knuckles deep into David’s chest. Still, it would have been fine … except the exo-frame made a rather conspicuous ‘cracking’ sound.
“Huh,” David said, touching the new crinkle in his armor. “It’s not supposed to do that.”
And then the pain hit him.

“You’ll stop me?” Owen asked, one eyebrow raised.
“I’ll nag you,” Xanatos said. He leaned over and re-adjusted the seatbelt, getting rid of all the laxness Owen had worked into it. “Hands at ten-and-two, Owen. Eyes on the road.”
