“None of us know each other anymore, Stan. Think about it– We haven’t seen each other in like, what… four, five-ish years? People change a lot in a couple’a years.”
But Kenny still felt the same as he always had. He almost said so, too, but decided that might have insulted him. Maybe he had changed, and Stan just didn’t see it. Maybe he was too focused on the parts of Kenny that felt familiar. He tried to look at his features in a new light, noticing new small things like scars, tired creases under his eyes, a freckle that had formed on his upper lip, and they were slightly chapped… He blinked fast, snapping himself out of his pot-induced examination. Hopefully Kenny hadn’t noticed him full on staring at his lips. Stan handed the pipe back, enjoying the soft burning in his throat and chest. “You’re right, it just… felt… shitty.”
“Yeah, it is shitty. Sucks when people you know become people you don’t. But I mean, you’re not the only one. After everyone started movin’ out and goin’ to college, this town got real lonely…. Hey, Stan?”
“Ah…Yeah?”
“I’m really glad you came back.”
