As her knees make deep grooves, Kara can feel how this (awful terrible Rao-forsaken) planet clings to her face through the little specks of fly-away earth that lodge themselves onto her eyelashes, the dip above her chin, the curve of her cheeks.
Kara doesn’t wipe the dirt away though. Instead, she digs her fingers into the ground and leans her forehead against the loosened soil under her grip, teeth bared, swallowing down the scream clawing at her chest, her spine, the roof of her mouth.
No sound escapes her lips.

She started to recognize it as a constant, something she would always expect to see on Celine’s face when she often grew quiet towards her, and Rumi couldn’t figure out why. She was right there, wasn’t she? How could Celine look at her like she missed her, like she didn’t know where she went, when she never left her? It was in the way she sighed, exasperated, as Rumi stumbled on the same sequence for the fifth time, tripping over her own feet and falling hard onto her forearms as her practice staff flew into the surrounding trees.
Celine loved her, but she didn't want her.

Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

Mira pushes herself back to her feet and takes a step towards her. Rumi doesn’t flinch. She wishes she’d flinch. Mira knows she’s a wildfire. She’ll always leave ashes in her wake, even if she doesn’t want to. It’s just her nature.
So that’s why she bites back with “Oh, fuck off! Like you’ve ever talked to us!” and as soon as it’s out of her mouth she feels like she’s going to be sick.
Sometimes the worst part about being angry is learning that people still love you afterwards.
