Rumi could feel her eyes beginning to fix on the ceiling, her hands awkwardly scrunching the bedsheets around her just so there was something to do, but she could already tell it wasn't enough - not nearly - her breath already shallowing as her mind began to race freely. The familiar anxiety began to set in, curling up through her chest and lungs like smoke - the fear of being alone with her thoughts only compounding the issue - but it wasn't that she was - alone - not really, but she was, that there was nothing to stop her, to save her - the knowledge her phone was right there burned into her mind - if she could just reach it and call for help but she couldn't because it was too far and it was too much and -
The distant click of the flat door opening - followed promptly by the filtered voices of Zoey and Mira. Rumi could feel herself breathe. Properly - just for a moment - but the pressure building in her chest - the smoke burning her system - released slightly.

Summary
Zoey had always enjoyed putting things together.
From building Lego sets with her older brother in his room. To replacing car parts with her father on a Tuesday morning in July. To lazy evenings sat at the coffee table piecing together a jigsaw puzzle with her mom. There was a certain satisfaction Zoey found in going from a thousand splintered pieces to a finished product.
Huntrix is a fractured mess in the wake of Gwi-ma’s defeat. The tenuous relationship they’d started in the back third of the world tour was straining at the edges and threatening to buckle under the weight of their individual betrayals.
On the surface everything seemed fine - they were professionals after all. From the outside not a single hair or emotion was out of place. No faults to exploit, no fears to be shown.
But they were still cowards, still liars.
And Zoey isn’t sure if she knows how to fix the broken pieces of her heart.

Zoey has to pause a good twenty feet from the star—and it is some weird sparkling thing hovering above the roof with nothing holding it aloft—because the prickling sensation is making it hard for her to walk.
Leaning on her hands on her knees, Zoey shivers, blinking rapidly as the star begins to pulse, elongating upwards. A deep sound that she feels in her very bones, some kind of humming, reverberates from the stretching star, sending ripples across the pond.
She wants to take a step back, but her feet won’t move.
The star shudders, once, twice, and on the third time, it suddenly rips open horizontally too—and water shoots up as something rockets out of the star.
