Why does it seem so scared?

Summary
In 2225, Earth scientists intercept an asteroid projected to have originated near the 40 Eridani A solar system, discovering an alien virus which drastically transforms human biology upon contact. Realization, an extremist underground science research group, gets their hands on the virus to use on one unfortunate Dr. Ryland Grace.
Many years earlier, a mysterious iron-rich ocean with microscopic alien life was discovered on Mars' new third moon, AT-5. Simon, a former Eden engineer, is one of a group deemed responsible by the Consolidation of Iron for the destruction of Filament Station. Shipped back to Earth as a convict, he's set to endure the torturous effects of this "blood ocean's" parasite in Realization as penance for his crimes.
