“You love–” Sirius pauses abruptly, and it takes another moment for Remus to notice the glass grey eyes are staring only at him, puffy lips parting slightly and blinking in a way that tells Remus he’s been recognized. Somewhere in the background, James and Peter play on, and it’s clear to Remus that Sirius misses his beat.
But he’s frozen in time, because Sirius was now looking at him with a strange muchness– momentarily, they weren’t outsiders, foreign to one another, they were just Remus and Sirius, existing in that devoted sort of way he remembered. Glimpses of them flicker to the forefront of his mind; a secret hiding spot on campus, limbs interlacing to a point of no return, with heads tilting back in pleasure. It was only them, and the awful passage of time hadn’t gone and passed them by.

“Rosie Cotton dancing,” Sam said, “and Pippin and Merry stealing the fireworks early. And you-” his voice died in his throat. He could feel Frodo’s eyes on him, but Sam kept his gaze steady on the far-off horizon. Somewhere, he hoped, the armies of Rohan and Gondor and all the kingdoms of men were gathered. He hoped that he and Frodo hadn’t been too late. Sam hoped a lot of useless things.
“Your laughter, Mister Frodo.” Sam’s voice was rough from smoke and the building tears in the back of his throat. He closed his eyes, and tried to remember the sound of Frodo’s laugh. The shape of his smile- how it formed dimples in his cheeks and made his eyes crinkle up into little crescents. It had been so long, the memories felt faint and dreamy, like something Sam had imagined long ago. Once, a lifetime past, Frodo’s smile was Sam’s favorite thing in the widest world. More beautiful than any flower he could grow in the garden, brighter than any of Gandalf’s fireworks cracking open in the sky. “I loved to hear you laugh, sir,” Sam whispered, and he felt a tear trace down his filthy cheek.
