He’s seen women and men alike check him out, eyes drifting over the tattoos that creep up his chest, peeking past the collar of his many faded band t-shirts, lingering on his biceps on the way back down, the way his thighs push the stretch of his skinny jeans almost to their breaking point. He’s seen teenagers giggle as they pass, cheeks flushed red and eyes averted, men his age flick their eyes over Buck appreciatively, women who could be his abuela’s friends nudge their companions and whisper, eyes bright.

Stiles must have made some kind of noise, because the woman’s head snaps up.
“Oh,” she says. “You’re awake. That’s a good sign. Try to stay that way this time, will you?” She turns back over her shoulder and calls out, “Derek! He’s conscious!”
The loudness of it makes Stiles’ head throb so hard that he almost doesn’t comprehend what she said. It isn’t until Derek is right there, in the room, leaning over him with that same concerned scowl, that Stiles realizes he wasn’t dreaming earlier.
“Derek,” Stiles croaks. “What are you doing here?”
The scowl deepens. “You break into my house after four years of nothing, collapse on my floor covered in blood, and then have the gall to ask me what I’m doing here?”

There’s a sandbox on the other side of the door that kids are pawing through, nudging each other as they dig up magnetic letters, and through the door Derek can see the rest of the students sprawled across the room reading books.

He catches Derek by the arm and Derek lets himself be turned, surprised when Stiles shoves a small box into his hands. “I don’t know if you still celebrate it or what but… I wanted you to know someone was thinking about you. Happy birthday.”
Then he squeezes Derek’s arm and bolts, gone before Derek can think to stop him.
He opens the box standing there, only to find one singular, misshapen, sloppily-frosted, cupcake, with a candle in the box next to it. It’s kind of squished despite the paper towel all around it to keep it from banging around in the box.
Derek has to take a moment to sit down because yeah, he can’t deny it anymore.
He’s gone on Stiles.
