What Maverick felt wasn’t shame, or regret. Rather, it was something different, like resentment, and it pricked at the base of his stomach every time he looked at either Ice or Slider lately. Yet, somehow, the feelings tinged awkwardly with a specific possessive nature, and a warmth he couldn’t quite explain, and as much as he wanted to pry his eyes away, he just couldn’t.
And now, staring at them as they slept soundly on either side of him, feelings and realizations began bubbling up and unfurling, blooming in his chest all at once.

“Three weeks had gone by since the incident of Hop 31, and Maverick was yet to properly sleep.”
In the universe where Goose lives, Maverick and his RIO survived and got away with only minor injuries. Although the Hop didn’t leave any physical scars, Mav is feeling the weight of the incident on his shoulders. Every time he tries to sleep, he has nightmares about killing his RIO. So he decides the best way to hand the situation is… to not sleep at all.
With a zombified Maverick at hand, it’s not long before the flyboys take notice and try to help their wingman. But with a panicked lie from the youngest aviator when questioned, they end up accidentally doing more harm than good.
