Reuben Price considered himself a patient man.
He sat in the club in the Darkport, surrounded by music, smoke, and women. Avarice, lust, and sweat permeated the air, and his people lounged in every square inch of the place, drinking and laughing uproariously. It was a picture-perfect scene to Reuben, who sighed deeply, expelling dark, warmly-scented smoke in spirals.
A patient man.

Summary
It’s almost poetic, how they hear footsteps thundering down the hall as Chip speaks his name. Something akin to a sob tears itself from Chip’s throat at the familiar sound.
Caution thrown to the wind, he’s ripping the door open with such force before he can even be sure that it’s Gillion. He knows it is– nothing else in this wretched place had footsteps, in the literal sense. Just haunting growls and groans that bounced off of every cold, gray wall. Nothing except for their friend, throwing himself through the door as if right on time. Chip could cry. He’s sure the same could be said for Jay. Gillion’s eyes are wide when he meets theirs, and he looks almost scared— that means he’s alive, alive, alive– that Chip is, basically, already getting over the joy of not having lost his friend. They still aren’t out of this mess, even if things are looking much better.
None of their lives are saved, not yet.

Chip and Jay are a little too trusting, and it spirals into the demise of the Riptide Pirates.

But Reuben says they’re a load of bullshit. Says, "If you believe in that shit, then you believe we aren’t brothers."
And Chip can’t afford to consider that, even without any mark of Reuben staining his skin. A life without Reuben is a life without warmth, without safety, however tense. So Chip doesn’t believe in soul marks, and he scoffs at the idea that he ever will.

His black eye glitters maliciously, the purple one humming, and there is blood under his fingernails.

Chip tries his hardest to squirm away, but his brother’s grip only tightens in response to the fighting. The alleyways are dirty, and coated in all measures of trash; easy to trip on. And Chip does, as he’s pulled along — legs slamming against dumpsters in an attempt to keep up, shoes scuffing and slipping on rotten food and stray bricks.
“Please,” He begs, trying to dislodge the bare nails from his skin. “You knew that mark was a shit one — come on! They’re in — “ Choking out a breath is hard, around all the desperate words in his throat. “ — They’re in a fuckin’ picket fenced neighborhood! And — and I can’t do it right all the time! You know that!”
Chip is a bad robber, much to his brother's annoyance.

Summary
A clear, sunny day greets them when they step through the portal. The sky is a brilliant blue, a stark contrast to the dreadful grey and black that the crew had grown used to in the Black Sea, with faint wisps of white clouds dotting the open expanse. Birds cry and cartwheel freely above them, seagulls and osprey and sandpipers. Sunlight pours down on them from its midday position, warm and bright and nearly golden where it reflects off the sand and the waves. The waving blades of beach grass leading up to the hills of this island are lit up with fuzzy haloes that flicker as they move. Bugs chirp and buzz in cacophonous song, hidden in the living yellow grass.
It’s beautiful, and Chip gets to enjoy it for all of about six seconds.

“Your little friend’s got a hit placed on him by the most powerful man in Allport.” The man tightens his grip, crushing Chip’s lithe wrists under the palms of his hands. “Musta’ done something real stupid to get Captain Price after your head.”
Captain Price.
Chip’s breath catches inside his throat.
It’s not that he’s surprised, not really. There’s always been a part of Chip — deep in his ribcage — which knew this was coming. Of course his freedom was temporary, a brief interjection in some kind of never ending nightmare. Chip’s not ready, though — he’ll never be ready, not when his organs are dust and his crew is nothing more than a fable — so it can’t be true.
He won’t let it be true.
Chip never intends to tell anyone about his brother, not with a gun to his head. Unfortunately, the world has other plans.

Of course, Chip at this point had to be used to this. All of the Riptide Pirates were. However, he wasn’t prepared for the great Captain Reuben Price to show his ugly face again, and standing up on his own for that matter.
