“You never did tell me why you’re doing all this.” Chuuya decides to change the topic. “You look like you’re having a shit time. Why force yourself?”
Dazai hums, resting his head on his knees. “Currently, I’m not allowed to die. So I suppose I’m trying to earn my right to live.”
A scoff, unamused but not derisive either. “The hell is that? You’re here right now, aren’t you?” When he receives no response, he sighs. “You know, I don’t get you at all. You toy with friends and foe alike, always lording over everyone, but it’s not like you’ve ever looked at anything. It’s like you’re far off in your own world. I can’t tell what’s going on in your head half the time.”
“Maybe if your brain weren’t being consumed by your hat, you would,” Dazai replies automatically, earning an indignant shout from Chuuya.
For Dazai, living might be far more terrifying than dying, but there are people who will catch him when he falls.
(A BEAST ending rewrite in which Atsushi makes it in time, Dazai says the right things for once, and things aren’t as broken as they seemed.)

Their eyelids flutter. “Huh?”
Dazai takes a deep breath and intertwines his fingers on the round table between them. “You see, all my life I’ve been able to see things that other people can’t. Ghosts. Spirits. Yokai. That kind of thing, you know?” He takes Chuuya’s welcoming silence as his cue to go on. “Anyways, I’m pretty sure my manager thinks I’m even crazier than normal because I’m talking to myself at this very moment, right? You’re just another figment of my imagination? I’ve grown bored enough to conjure a pretty little thing like you out of my mind to make life more interesting?”
A dreadful minute of silence passes before they say, “You’re not crazy.”

When they were in the mafia, Chuuya once gave Dazai a gift: a silver watch befitting the youngest executive of the Port Mafia. Four years since the Demon Prodigy disappeared, white bandages are the only thing Dazai’s wrists wear anymore.
Chuuya isn’t hurt by that. At all.
He is, however, very unhappy with being woken up in the middle of the night just because someone decided to bombard his phone with drunk calls.

A moment later, the quiet thud of the front door shutting reaches Chuuya’s ears, leaving behind only silence and one too many thoughts occupying his tired mind. “Yeah,” the redhead says for no one to hear. “I don’t like your ‘in due time’ one fucking bit, shitty traitor.”

Dazai would bet money he did not have that this whole situation was the President’s fault.
..
That wasn’t entirely fair. It was much more likely this was all Ranpo’s fault, and the President was just an unknowing, well-intentioned accomplice.
Did Dazai enjoy any opportunity to rile up Yokohama’s angriest little slug? Certainly. Did that in any way mean that he was looking for his coworkers to meddle in his personal life? Obviously not.

Summary
Dazai did not want to hold Chuuya’s hand. The only reason he was thinking about it was experimental curiosity about the otherworldly thing possessing the hatrack.
He didn’t want it, so it would be fine. Dazai only lost things that he wanted, so as long as he didn’t want it, he couldn’t lose anything.(Alternatively: after they hold hands to defeat Randou, Dazai has a lot of yearning, and he deals with his emotions in a characteristically avoidant manner. By indulging himself whenever Chuuya is knocked out post-Corruption.)
