Emmrich dreams of the sound of his name being called, or the simple knowledge that there is someone who cares for him in the next room. It should be a relief from vivid nightmares of his mortal demise, but it is not. His heart breaks upon awakening.
Because it all dissipates with cruel rapidity when he opens his eyes to the weak light and is again a lonesome speck, sighing stale air in a cavernous hall of countless dead.

Summary
Amara Savani is the disgraced eldest daughter of a Tevinter magister who has spent the past fifteen years in the Necropolis after an incident in Minrathous made her a political liability. She's carved out a life in exile - throwing herself into her research, she's come to enjoy her time in Nevarra, even with the ever-present shadow of her family never far from her mind. When her younger half-sister Ursa finds a love match in the youngest son of a prominent Altus family, Amara's unmarried status is the only remaining barrier to their engagement in the eyes of the prospective groom's traditionalist family. Unwilling to submit to a life with the political candidates her father has procured, she strikes a deal with Emmrich - come to Tevinter to marry her, and receive her dowry as funding for his research.
Unable to see his friend trapped in a loveless marriage, he agrees - and the two of them embark on a journey to Tevinter, determined to keep up the ruse long enough to make it back to Nevarra... but Minrathous has other ideas.

A familiar shame radiates through Rook's body, tangling with the embarrassment already taking hold. She feels frozen in place for a moment, but when Emmrich tries again to explain to Taash exactly how much he isn't interested in her, the shame propels her to her feet and away from him, swiftly climbing the stairs opposite from where they're standing.
"Rook," Emmrich calls after her, his brow furrowed. "I haven't finished. You're still in pain."
She pauses, just below the top of the stairs. She can't meet his eye; her focus instead is on his hands, now resting on the back of the chair she'd just vacated. "I know how to deal with pain, Emmrich," she says, flatly. "It's fine."
Rook is used to not being wanted; it isn't surprising when Emmrich makes it clear he isn't interested, but it still hurts.
Emmrich has a misunderstanding he desperately needs to clear up.Series

And it wasn’t just her forthright, sometimes clumsy, always charming physical overtures, which were already staggering: to be desired by someone young and splendid. It was her trust. The way she looked at him like he had all the answers. The way she opened her heart to him, even as he held his back by a leash. It couldn’t be as it appeared: it simply wasn’t possible. No matter how pure her intentions, women like her did not settle for men like him.

Something in Emmrich’s chest, utterly despite himself, swelled.
“Yes,” he murmured. “I would…like that very much, Sigrid.”
Sigrid smiled and lifted her satchel over her head. “Great. Then let’s get married.”Some years ago, Emmrich Volkarin met his wife, married her, and fell in love with her. In that order.
In 9:50 Dragon, Varric Tethras finds himself in a backwater of Nevarra, where he enlists the help of a secretive necromancer on a rainy night. These two events are not unrelated.

Voice to the dead. Now there’s a thought. Not a pleasant one, per se, but certainly striking. Rook can’t, off the top of her head, remember how many people she’s killed, but she can’t imagine any one of them would have anything nice to say about her.
Lucia "Rook" de Riva kills for a living, and she's got a contract: find the guy who killed Varric Tethras, and kill him right back. Emmrich Volkarin is a medical examiner, and an advocate for the dead. As Rook tries to finish her job, she makes more work for him.
Their paths keep crossing, but sooner or later they're going to collide.

“Not once,” Rook answers, resisting the urge to cover her face.
“On occasion, in my younger years,” Emmrich answers, picking one up to inspect it; it's a soft purple color and the sweeping shape of it is graceful -- Rook is not surprised at all that that's the first one he gravitates towards, “although never with pieces so well-made.”
“That one is made of dawnstone,” the shopkeep says. “It's a particularly conductive material. Warms up quickly. Easy to enchant.”
“Enchant?” Emmrich asks, interest piqued.
The shopkeep’s eyebrows pop up in excitement. “You're not familiar with the enchantments on the market?”
Emmrich glances at Rook, who shakes her head. “We're not!” he says, and, as always, seems excited about the prospect that he's about to learn something new, regardless of subject matter.'
