She and her mom are both painfully aware that she's a lesbian but they're trying to pretend that's not real--lots of stuff with her mother, lots of low self-esteem depressing sex with men. MadHel, but it's gonna take a sec and most of it will be repression and yearning.

Probably the latter. Even now, every inch of her speaks of a boring, anxious insomniac with paranoid delusions and a total inability to relax around others. Solitary confinement, Ruby's worst nightmare, would probably suit White just fine.
