“It’s okay,” says the person, voice trembling as they run gentle fingers through Mike’s hair. It feels nice. Even through the pain, it feels nice.
Then again, Mike isn’t used to casual touch. He has spent the past five years pushing it away.
He opens his eyes weakly, grimacing at the sunlight pouring through. It’s blocked by a head, the person he’s sitting on. From this angle, their features are upside down, obscured by the light behind them.
But he can make out some. It’s a young man, maybe around Mike’s age, with brown hair, soft eyes, soft features. He looks kind. He looks gentle.
Truthfully, he looks a lot like—
“Will?” Mike mumbles, blinking wearily.Or: Mike hasn’t been the same for the last five years. Ever since he lost Will, it’s like he’s been wandering aimlessly in search of purpose. But when he stumbles upon a fairy ring that leads to a magic world and a familiar face, he has to determine what exactly his purpose is and where his priorities lie.

“I don’t bite,” Kas says, flicking a bit of ash away as he glances at Mike out of the corner of his eye. The only light is the faint burning red from the butt of the cigarette and the faded streetlight overhead. He doesn’t look angry. He doesn’t even look scary. He looks like he could be a student at Hawkins High, if not for the scar.
“I have reasons to believe that’s not entirely true,” Mike responds, stilted. He should run. He should fight. He should do something other than stand here and have a chat with the enemy.
Kas laughs, the sound soft. “I guess that’s fair. I don’t bite right now, I should say. I can’t make any promises for tomorrow.”
“You calling a truce?” Mike asks. Kas shrugs, scooting over. There’s plenty of space on the porch, but the invitation is clear. Mike should scoff, or yell, or just leave.OR: Mike feels like he's missing something. Maybe Vecna's right hand man can help him figure out what it is.

“You cannot tell me he wouldn’t feel like this was his fault.”
“I cannot and I will not,” Mike agreed. “But that doesn’t mean we should hide it. That’ll just make him feel more awful when he inevitably does find out.”
“It’s not inevitable,” Will grumbled. “We could hide it.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “It took them ten minutes to figure out we were dating.”
“That’s because you couldn’t keep your hands off of me. Or your mouth.” Not that Will had been complaining. Mike was a good kisser.
“Can you blame me?” Mike grinned, leaning down to press a kiss to Will’s stomach. “You’re cute.”or: Will has some new powers, but he still needs to tell his friends

Summary

Eventually, Will has to lay some ground rules. In order to finally get over his best friend, Will tells Mike all of the endearing things he’s no longer allowed to do. Will thinks this will make everything better. Mike… realizes some things.

The first time it happens, Will classifies it as a little accident.
When he wakes, the morning sun is burning through the window onto their faces, and Mike’s cursing as he stands to close the curtains, stumbling all the way.
“Scoot over,” he grumbles, voice dry, and for a second Will can’t do anything other than sigh like a lovesick idiot. It’s a second too late for Mike, because he grumbles more words Will doesn’t catch under his breath and then physically pushes Will towards the wall to lay beside him, arm over Will’s middle. A second of silence passes, then Mike sighs, only to whine: “Fuck, my head hurts.”
Will can’t help it: he breaks down laughing, much to Mike’s offense.
