When a wife plot meant for the distant future somehow triggers and prematurely strikes Liu Qingge, he is poisoned by a demonic aphrodisiac of which the cure is dual cultivation with the heart's strongest desire. The problem is, Liu Qingge doesn't have a heart's desire. Shen Qingqiu doesn't know that though, because while eavesdropping on Qian Cao to find out dirt on Liu Qingge, he overhears Mu Qingfang talking about the cure... and then saying his name.

The best fit for the job is a fellow Immortal known only as the Turtle Sage, whose knowledge of the Forest is all that will get Shen Qingqiu to the plant and back home safely.
He expects the Sage to be a grisled, half-feral man, bushy and wild and smelly -- not, you know, an actual turtle.

Shen Yuan wakes up to the sound of crying.
He lies there for a moment, feeling like cling film stretched too tightly over something pointy, in danger of tearing down the middle but holding on by his fingernails. It’s dark, it’s smelly and he is laying face down against a heated stone floor, or maybe it’s just some faux stone tiles for the nature aesthetic. It feels like his brain got replaced with moss or cotton or balled up, wet paper towels that’s coming apart. In the stretched out moment where he takes it all in, he decides this fucking place sucks, and he will never visit again.
The crying is to his left.

“I have no secrets to hide,” Liu Qingge says, and lifts his chin challengingly at Shen Qingqiu, who bristles in return. “Do you?”
“Ah, Liu-shidi, if you don’t have any secrets then you should get some real quick!” Shang Qinghua says with bright, manic cheer, his smile and his eyes a little too wide. “The consequences for not meeting the curse’s requirements would be very very bad!”

Who was this?
A man who had seen through years of Shen Yuan’s charade in an instant—and then successfully identified the key artifact of a wife plot that he had never had the benefit of reading about in a book.
Shen Yuan had never before met anyone that made him feel slow in piecing the plot together.
Even Airplane, who created the whole stupid world that they lived in, never blindsided him with anything resembling intelligence.
And yet it was undeniably still Shen Jiu in every other recognizable aspect: manipulative, scathing, and terrifying.
How strange to… meet someone who… evaded neat characterization? Neither fully the role he was written to be, nor fully outside of it.

Shen Qingqiu is the root of the issue, Liu Qingge knows this. And were he younger, he would assume a trick and throw accusations. Now, he’s grown enough to acknowledge that this is all on his part, and Shen Qingqiu is innocent in the matter, despite thorough involvement.
As innocent as one can be while acting as a seductress! A shrill voice inside him yells. He pushes it down violently and pretends that the complaints he hears later on his peak about training dummies being ripped to shreds apply to a disciple rather than him.

Chuuya scoffs. It’s just… obvious. His clothing, his speech patterns, even his smell. It isn’t musty enough yet. “I’ve killed vampires hundreds of years older than you. You’ve got newborn written all over you.”
“Chuu-ya,” the vampire whines again. “That isn’t a very nice thing to say.”
A chill runs down Chuuya’s spine. He definitely hasn’t introduced himself.
