Bruce’s hand closed around yet another object. Bruce didn’t quite understand when he pulled it out. It was a rather small sneaker. The colors, once bright, were faded. Two velcro straps were bent and kinked into a twisted shape. There was lint on the velcro rendering it useless. Bruce had the vague memory of Dick picking the shoes out nearly a month after he’d first moved in. But Bruce felt that the memory couldn’t be true. They were surely too small.

Damian knew he was bleeding without opening his eyes. His forehead was wet with it, hair sticking uncomfortably to his skin. Iron and mildew flooded his senses with each inhale. A low moan escaped as he started to carefully shift, testing his body. Everything ached. His arms were wrenched back and twisted up between his shoulder blades. Tight cords cut into his wrists, ankles, and knees.
“Hush now,” Someone said, “Stay down.” But it wasn’t his family’s kind hands that touched his rising head. A steel-toed boot settled against his neck instead, pressing him back down. “Wouldn’t want to nick you on accident.”
“Get your foot off of him.” Grayson’s snarl sent chills down Damian’s spine.

There are too many white smiles and dark heads in the dim room to distinguish one wealthy man from another, but among the tapered suits and glinting watches, she hears deep bells in a voice. For a moment, it’s as if the tent surrounds her, all of its hazy chaos and buzz, chalk fogging up the yellow lights, its smell itchy and new. John Grayson was the same height as her when she met him.
Across the room, she is delighted to see his son has grown taller than the both of them.

Bruce died and Cass couldn’t breathe for a week. She didn’t want to believe it at first, didn’t want to even think of it. She knew Bruce and she knew death and they didn’t fit together, not at all.
He was gone, gone like Brenda and Bludhaven, gone like Steph had been. Like Faizul. She felt it inside of her, so keenly it was as if she had killed him by her own hand. She could search the whole earth and not find a trace of him. It was too much. The pressure was squeezing her insides, left her constantly choking for air. She couldn’t stop dry heaving.
Or: Bruce is dead. Instead of leaving, Cass stays in Gotham. She learns a thing or two about being Batman.

It was four hours until the break of dawn, and while full moon was high in the sky, it’s silver gleam barely penetrated the inside of the edifice. Most of its windows were purposefully designed to keep the light out, after all. Careful not to let his footsteps echo, Batman walked past the entrance hall and the visitor center, then turned left to go to the west wing. A long, dust-encrusted corridor with tiled floors that had never lined-up properly extended before him, its cracks resembling veins from which dried up sprouts grew, and then, deprived of any nourishment, withered. Though now hollow of its utilitarian grandeur, the walls were still too tall yet too claustrophobic, their deteriorating blankness forging grotesque monsters out of peeling paint and grime. They watched him. Judged him. And they found him wanting.
OR
When the Batcomputer picks up on strange readings coming from the abandoned Gotham City Youth Center, Batman must go investigate.

“This apartment isn’t as secure as you think,” Tiger said, slamming the door and clicking the deadbolt shut. That’s all there was: a deadbolt and a flimsy lock. Tiger had seen more security on the door of abandoned shacks.
“It’s my sanctuary,” Dick said. There was a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead, and his arm- shoulder dislocated- was hanging limp against his side. Even with all that, a wild grin was split open across his face. You’d never be able to tell from his expression that he was injured at all.
“It’s a shitty sanctuary,” Tiger replied, “Now sit down.”
