Summary
A laugh is startled out of Remus at James's proposition. He thinks it over for a second, going through the pros and cons. Realistically he knows there wouldn't be any repercussions and it's not like he's actually dating James, and if this is James's idea he knows that he's okay with it. And it's not like he's in a relationship with anyone that could get mad about it so why not have some fun with it?
Remus smiles and looks back up to an eager James, “Yes my dear Prongs, I will be your fake, selective-situational boyfriend.”
James beams, “Oh this is the happiest day of my life, we are gonna have so much fun with this.”
OR: 5 times James and Remus pretend to date to screw with Snape and others find out. Plus 1 times Sirius finds out.

Steve has spent a lot of time in the carpark of Hawkins High school, four years of starting and finishing his days – leaning on his car talking with Tommy and their friends in the afternoon sun or making out with Nancy before class.
He didn’t think he would spend so much time here after he graduated.
It's another Friday night in an empty carpark waiting for a bunch of teenagers to finish up playing a game, its cold and he feels like he's heard the song that plays on the radio twice already.
When he decides he's had enough he doesn't expect to come face to face with a boy he remembers for hating everything he stood for.

Summary
Mike shrugs, looking mildly uncomfortable. "Didn't seem important," he says, and Will's annoyance comes back in full force.
"Didn't seem- okay, well did you tell her that we weren't together?" he demands, fingers tightening around Mike's sleeve again.
"Yes!" Mike squawks, wrenching his arm out of Will's grip. He looks- not angry, per se, but definitely a little annoyed now. Confused at Will's reaction, maybe, and- yeah, Will knows he's being overdramatic, but Mike is being entirely too underdramatic about all this, and he thinks they should at least try to meet in the middle. "But I don't know what my parents think. And by the way, I'm not loving how offended you are by people thinking you're dating me."
Will pauses. "Hang on, that's not what I'm saying." He's thrilled by the concept, actually, but he knows he shouldn't be and Mike can't know that, can't know how bad he wants this, which is why Will's had to take a different route.

"What!” Gareth exclaimed. ”Do you think that he was trying to make fun of you?”
“I’m not sure. He said that he meant fake dating. He thought it was the best way to prove he’s changed and to piss off dear old dad.”
“What did he say when you said no?...You said no right?”
”He said he would help me study!”
"Pretending to date the boy that you’ve had a crush on for years can't end well.”
Eddie shrugged. “Even if it’s just pretend, if this is the only way I get to have him it will be worth it.”

Steve's parents want him to become worthy of the Harrington name. Stop hanging around the kids, stop talking to delinquents and losers. Apply to college and finally start down the path his father had paved.
So of course, Steve starts dating Eddie Munson.
Fake date, of course. He just needs to show his parents they can't control him, and show Hawkins that he's not King Steve anymore.
