He could see it in her eyes. It physically pained him to see such a reaction. For the first time in Roy Mustang’s eventful life, he was at a loss for action. The words he spoke were candid, truthful, and could never be taken back. This was not what he had wanted to say. He wanted to take it all back. Absorb every word, every breath, from the air and shove them back into his ashy, swollen lungs. She was breaking before him as each word soaked deep into the skin of her soul like an inverted wound.

Summary
Because of Roy's now impaired sight, Havoc informed him some military personnel had started treating Mustang differently; the colonel was certain they spoke of him behind his back, trying to push him out of his position and award it to someone undeserving. This trivial physical setback would not hinder him from his burning desire to restore value to the Ishbalan people and the country of Amestris. He could hide his stone tinted eye no longer and allowed it to open and stare deep into his subordinate’s glassy, toffee colored eyes. No matter what consequences befell him, no matter how detrimental a mistake the man could make, no matter how stubborn he could be, the woman sitting in the chair beside his bed was always with him.

As little rays of sun spread on Roy Mustang’s face, it caused him to become alert, wincing at the harsh morning light. The sun all but swallowed the room now, its sunny hues hugging the walls. Darkness loomed over the room dangerously as she felt words climbing up her throat, scratching and stinging as they attempted to ascend. “Good morning,” a deep voice greeted her, catching her off guard. “About last night,” she rasped; the dark tint of her eyes was shaking from her racing thoughts.

The liquid poison always seemed to make him more upset than he was before consuming it, though the darkness inside fed on the liquor as if it were constantly starving, its arms ravenously stretched out relentlessly. The aging Roy Mustang rose from his position on his couch, the consoling hands disappearing from him, and reached for his telephone. He petulantly let out a sigh, followed by, “Yes.” At night he always answered this way, for he wanted nothing more than the shortest conversation possible; the man wanted to be left with his thoughts and drink. “Yes, Mr. Roy Mustang? This is the nurse from Central Hospital. I am sorry to call at such an untimely hour, but I need to speak with you for a moment if you are able.” The sound emitted from his phone was surprising to say the least; the hospital hadn’t called him in weeks. He immediately felt embarrassed for the way he answered the telephone, especially considering what had happened a few weeks ago. His face grew hot red as he managed to answer, “Yes, of course. Is something wrong?"
