A handsome, panicked face swims into view, and Ilya isn’t sure, but he thinks the man is calling his name.
“…ya – hey! There you are,” the stranger says shakily, one strong hand clutching Ilya’s face. “Fuck, Ilya, you’ve gotta stay awake, okay? They’re coming, just hold on. I’m here.”
He’s ethereal under the stadium light. It falls like white water over his dark, messy halo of hair, caresses the edges of his tensed jaw and the anguish etched into his face, outlines the curve of his full, trembling lips as he looks down at Ilya, trying to hold Ilya’s gaze with his own.

“No one knows anything, man,” Hayden had assured him, but when Shane had clicked his tongue impatiently he’d admitted that, yes, he’d heard the rumor. More than a few times. And Shane was pretty sure that guys were less likely to make those comments in front of Hayden than anyone else, since everyone knew they were tight. Which meant it was probably pretty widespread.

Summary
Ilya doesn’t seem to go out much, aside from the few times Shane sees him leave and return dragging two armfuls of groceries. He slips out onto the fire escape several times a day, every day, to chainsmoke and look miserable. It’s only natural, given the sheer amount of time he spends out there, that Shane would cross paths with him while using his own patio.
Shane has a four year plan to captain his college hockey team and join the MLH, but none of that will happen if he gets lung cancer from all the cigarette smoke his smartass new neighbor produces, or if he keeps wasting his time meeting him on the fire escape.

“If he’s internally decapitated, he’s dead,” Shane huffs, tossing his arm out at the television. “Why are they saying they can save him?”
Ilya chuckles. “Doctor Hollander, huh?”
“I’d be a great doctor, thank you,” Shane quips back.
“Not one of these doctors. You would be a great ear doctor, or something. Whatever doctor is most boring.”
“Oh, fuck you!” Shane mock-gasps at him, kicking a pillow into his side. Ilya cracks up, smacking Shane’s thigh lightly.
This is fine, Shane thinks. It was a one-time thing. We’re okay.
But later, when he’s in bed, that feeling, the one he had when he first saw Ilya kissing Sasha, comes back.
OR
Shane thinks he’s homophobic because he hates Ilya’s male hookup.

“That’s not—” Shane starts, then stops, because he actually doesn't know how to finish that thought without sounding like an idiot. His jaw works, teeth grinding together.
That's not what I meant. That's not the point. You said I was boring and you were right and I need you to say it again so I know where I stand, so I know what you think of me, so I can stop waiting for the other shoe to drop.
He settles for: “You were kind of an asshole.”
