Summary
Daniil's body overflows with the echo of blood, the tang of bile, the creaking of bone. He's a fragile man, in poor health, pushing an overworked body further on energy it does not have.
Artemy settles the brush against his heart, a properly moving thing. Slowly traces the line that encircles it.

Summary
It would be easier, this way. And he finally had something to show for his work. He could stand firm against the waves of suspicion and tell them about the Sand Plague and how he had vanquished it.
(Not alone. Never alone, but with Artemy's broad hands and soft heart, the two of them late in the night, desperate to save just one more person. In his time as a doctor, he doesn't think he's ever cared so much about the patients.)

Summary
"Dankovsky," his right hand, gently grasping around Daniil's left wrist, stops the man in his tracks. "How much have you slept tonight?"
"Enough." He gives the answer evenly, an air of nonchalance to him. But the non-answer is still enough to tip him off that their definitions of 'enough' are not one and the same.

Summary
The Bachelor—man of science, child of the capital—has no ritual in him. No way to excise the growing tumor in his heart. Artemy should have seen it building. Expected something drastic. No ritual, but he doesn’t lack for drama.
“Oynon.” Artemy reaches for him. The Bachelor finally looks up.
(the Bachelor has realized that this is all a farce. the Haruspex helps him through it.)

“When was the last time you slept?” Burakh repeats, but far gentler than before.
“A day or so ago,” the Bachelor replies dismissively, adjusting the microscope to look at the slide. “Maybe two. Acta non verba, Burakh.”The two healers fight their way through the Sand Pest.

Summary
“So,” the Bachelor says to him. “This is goodbye, I believe.” And then; “until next time.”
Behind his voice, Artemy can hear the chatter of a newly healthy, newly cured town. Dankovsky lowers himself from where he’s standing on the edge of the train. One of his legs brushes Artemy’s side as he sits back, and then — pulls away.
“You must be relieved,” Artemy says. “Finally going back to your Capital.”
Dankovsky scoffs. “I suppose so. Are you?”
“That’s a stupid question,” Artemy says.

Summary
“Do you feel warmer yet?” Artemy asks.
“No,” Daniil croaks out. And then he reaches.
They are both surprised, it seems, when the leather of his glove collides with the solid, yielding shape of the other’s cheek.
A stilted moment passes, with Artemy’s open eyes simply regarding Dankovsky in anticipation of whatever will follow touch.
“Real, then,” Daniil says, at length. “Thy life’s a miracle. Speak yet again.”
Or: Daniil returns to the Town-on-Gorkhon. Or so he thinks.

Summary
As the ground beneath his boot soles shivered, the Haruspex at last knew what the odonghs meant when they said they could sense the weight of every pair of feet on the streets of the town.
Because he felt footsteps that should not be there, crossing the Bridge Square.
Walking west, to where the sun set, the steps spoke their own rhythmic language, tolling like a warning bell: I am going to see this to the end.

Summary
Artemy wonders how Daniil feels about this vastness, autumnal grass as far as the eye can see, the sky so clear, hanging so low, so close you can almost touch it, you can almost get swallowed whole. Insignificant, a little speckle on the face of Earth. Daniil is a creature of the city, Artemy thinks, of clear boundaries, of walls to hide behind, of places to be alone in. He must feel exposed.
I'm a bad host, Artemy thinks.

Summary
Whatever it was, the little voice in his head, it told him to go home.
What he’ll find home is a different story. A vast quiet, thick and swathing. A dark hush over the rooms, the kitchen, nothing but the scraping of mice and the stray cat Notkin had brought in. An absence, acute, of Isidor, still lingering in the air.
And somewhere upstairs, far and close, in a room sealed tightly shut, another man sleeping.
Or: a breaking point.

Summary
Dys looks up at the sky with a thoughtful look. "There's this big rock in the western ridges that's almost totally flat on top. When I get near it, it makes me feel... happy?"
Sol parts their lips and brushes their mouth up Dys’s fingers, enjoying the way their lower lip catches against his skin. Dys’s breath hitches and Sol feels their own breathing pick up in response. Everything feels so nice and they’re so happy to be touching Dys. Why haven’t they done this before?
This is fundamentally a fic about healthy communication and learning together with a new partner. It started as a sex scene and then grew character development and ran away from me.
