Summary
“I, a demon of the second circle, have been summoned before you, Charles Rowland, to serve you for a year and a day. During this year and a day, I must obey your every order to the best of my ability and with no intent to kill, harm, trick, inconvenience, or otherwise wish ill upon you. When our year and a day has concluded, ownership of your soul will fall to me, whereupon I am obligated to drag you to the appropriate level of Hell. That would be Lust, for the uninformed, which I highly suspect you are,” the demon finishes.
Charles takes all that in for a second, grappling with the idea that if Pain isn’t lying, then Charles is set to spend the rest of a very long eternity in Hell.
Crystal is gonna fucking kill him.

“Crystal. Crystal, hey, look at me,” Charles is saying urgently, filtering past the ringing in her ears. His hands are cupping her face, insistently trying to tilt her head up and get her to meet his eyes. “Look at me, Crystal, you’re gonna be fine, alright?”

Summary
“Rowland has recovered from his illness”—Edwin had heard, after receiving a text from the man thanking him for the pot of soup he had dropped off—“and you two will be sent to Minsk to disable the device before it’s set off.”
“Both of us?” It wasn’t unusual for an agent and their handler to be sent to a location together, particularly when going undercover, but Edwin had never left the tomb of MI6 headquarters on a mission.
“You expect me to trust someone else with Rowland and this mission?” she returned. Something inside Edwin instinctually balked, and it must have shown on his face. “That’s what I thought.”

“Are you certain these tunnels lead back to the base?” Edwin asks, for the third time. “My sensors cannot detect any signs of—”
“Lifeforms in the immediate vicinity, I know, I know,” Charles says, and picks the left tunnel on a whim. Edwin follows him, leaving behind the carvings with a sigh. “But Niko said they’ve gotta have a way of getting between the base and the shipyard, ‘cause she can’t detect any emissions on the surface. Tunnels seem like the obvious answer, don’t they?”
“I suppose,” Edwin says. “I do retain the right to say ‘I told you so’ when we get lost and fall into an abyss, just so you’re aware.”
Charles and Edwin on a classic away mission-gone-wrong.

Summary
It’s been three days, and Charles Rowland is dying.
“Will you stop squirming, you little menace,” says Edwin, exasperated. “I’m going to miss your femoral artery and then you’ll be sorry.”
Charles grins. “Oops,” he says. He’s a featherlight, endorphin-flooded creature. It’s hard to feel too sorry. It’s hard to believe that anything bad is ever going to happen again. “Guess you’ll just have to do it again, then, won’t you?”
Charles Rowland and Edwin Payne, then and now.

“You haven’t missed a single birthday of mine since we met,” Edwin objects. “Even if some ideas did end with us colder and wetter than others.” He pulls back so Charles can see the unimpressed eyebrow he’s raised.
“But we only started, like, being together this year. That means I’ve got to count the other three we weren’t, plus all the others I missed,” Charles counters. “Besides, I think you’ll like what I’ve got planned tonight,” he says lowly, and leans in to whisper into Edwin’s ear. “Tonight is about you.”

Summary
“Edwin!” the fancy woman calls, hurrying over and lifting the boy from the ground. “Oh, look at the state of you.”
“It is only a bit of dirt, Mother,” he answers, and it’s then that Charles puts it together. Edwin. Edwin Payne, the crown prince of the kingdom, and his mother, Queen Esme. Charles scrambles up so he can kneel in front of her and bow his head. It’s a good thing Mum insisted on teaching him etiquette, in case she ever got that job at the palace laundry.
“Your Majesty,” Charles stammers. He feels very, very small, and very, very poor.
“Who is this? Edwin, what were you doing with this boy?” she asks. “Did he push you down?”

“That’s the nobility for you,” Charles says. “Eat ‘til you're bursting, drink ‘til you can’t see straight, make a total fool of yourself, forget it all afterward until the next year rolls around.”
“Need I remind you that you, too, are nobility now? Or does the title ‘Lord Rowland’ not suit?” Edwin teases. “Besides,” he continues, “your job at this banquet will be the same as it is every day. Lurk behind me and give threatening looks at anyone who seems like they might hurt me. Whereas I will be forced to entertain potential romantic partners all night.” He shudders.
“You’ll be beating the suitors off with a stick,” Charles says, grinning. “I’ll have to pull you out of a pile of them and carry you away to safety.”
“Ever the hero,” Edwin says dryly.

Summary
Tonight, Crystal is dreaming of the palace. She’s only been once, accompanying her parents to one of the annual banquets, but she recognizes it all the same. In the dream, she’s walking along a long, empty corridor. She doesn’t turn around to see, but she knows she’s left a trail of guards in her wake.
She’s approaching a door, outside of which stands one of the royal family’s bodyguards. He’s young, with curly hair and a keen gaze. He doesn’t even have the chance to get a word off before she places her palm on his forehead, and immediately his eyes are rolling back in his head as he slumps to the ground.
Then she’s entering the room, which turns out to be the prince’s sleeping chambers. He stirs as the door opens, calls out for someone named Charles. She walks over to the bed and pulls out a pouch of herbs, which she crushes in her hands and then blows in his face. He collapses, and the dream ends.

Summary
“Will you promise me something?” Edwin asks.
“Anything,” Charles swears, and means it.
“Promise me you won’t do this again. Promise me you won’t risk my father’s anger, even if it’s for my own sake.”
“Edwin,” Charles says, gutted, because that’s like trying to tell his own heart not to beat in his chest. It’s just not possible.
“You said anything. Promise me,” Edwin orders. “As prince I command it.” He pulls back to look Charles in the eye. Charles tries to duck his head, avoid that clear gaze, but Edwin catches him by the chin and forces it. “Please.”

Summary
“What about your paper for Professor Nurse’s class, though?” Charles asked. Early 20th Century Europe was the one class the two boys shared, though Edwin was much more interested in it than Charles.
“The one on Edwardian-era class struggles? I submitted that three days ago,” Edwin said with a frown. “Haven’t you?”
“Mate, I haven’t even started,” Charles admitted, a trace of panic in his voice.
“Charles!”
