Shane handed Jackie a glass with a generous pour of wine and waited for her to take a seat next to Hayden. He sat up a little straighter before delivering his well-rehearsed line, “Now that you’re both here, we wanted to let you know that we have started an application for adoption.”
In 2023, Shane and Ilya are 32 years old, out, married, and playing on the same professional hockey team. Even though they’ve come a long way in terms of their self-acceptance and trust in their relationship, they are still living and working and in a heteronormative world. Growing their family won't be easy. Luckily, they have each other.
This fic tells that story across six pivotal moments between 2023 and 2031.

Summary
Ilya has a career-ending injury at 26 and isn’t handling it well. At least he’s going viral as everyone’s favorite (and hottest) NHL commentator/interviewer for the Boston local network, and begins to expand himself beyond the world of hockey. But despite how much he would love to forget the career that was ripped away from him, he can't unthether himself from Shane Hollander.
Shane is alone at the top after Ilya Rosanov's career is ripped from his hands. He never expected to miss playing against Ilya so much, and for all that the media makes them out to be rivals, he's determined to be there for him however possible.
Both Shane and Ilya are isolated and adrift, realizing too slowly how much their love for hockey was because of each other. However it only takes a few chance meetings (and post-game interviews) to ignite something that may save them both. -

Ilya has spent six years being professionally ruthless and privately certain that Shane Hollander is the only person in the field who actually understands what he's doing.
Neither of them has done anything about it. They have grants to protect, tenure cases to build, and an academic rivalry that the entire field has opinions about. They are colleagues. Adversaries. Co-authors, as of this year, which is already proving to be a problem.
Then there's Senegal. The manuscripts. The hotel room. The note Ilya left before Shane woke up, which was harder to interpret than any lost archives.
Revise and Resubmit. Because the first draft of everything is always wrong.
