Summary
Something sharp presses against the back of his head, at the divot between his skull and spine, and a familiar voice says:
“Hello, Imp. Funny running into you tonight.”
Tommy’s heart drops into the pit of his abdomen.
“Smile,” he chokes out, biting back the man’s real name while in mask. Always best to be cautious, no matter how alone they might assume they are. “I thought you were on a business trip.” He hides the worst of his shaking under genuine curiosity.
“I was,” Dream shrugs, the tip of his ukaku digging harshly against Tommy’s head. He winces, the warm sensation of blood beading and trickling down his spine. It’s hardly more than a prick, but it’s a warning nevertheless, and Tommy stays stock-still, eyes trained forward.
“But I’m back now,” Dream says a bit louder, throwing his voice like a gauntlet. “And you,” he hums nonchalantly, “broke a rule.”

"Not... extraordinarily," Phyll'ssa hedges carefully, eyes narrowed in a churning mix of interest and suspicion. "No more than any other voidfarer."
Kha'Ra coughs a laugh. "Dont lie to me, we both know you have a fascination."
Slyness twitches at Phyll'ssa's mouth and he clacks his beak and chortles. "Fine. I admit it. But who wouldn't be?"

Summary
“Good. Let’s get out of here.” He says and is plunged straight into a nightmare.
There’s a blur of motion at his shoulder as he turns. The flash of talons graze by his head; a whip of wind blows back his hair and clothes and sends him tumbling onto the hard-packed dirt.
“Owl!” the cry rips from his throat as he forces himself onto his feet in panic. He catches a glimpse of Tommy’s startled, scrunched face as he falls backward in the cold, white ash, charcoal cast aside as his face tips upward in horror at the creature standing over him, wings spread wide.
“Tommy!”
Wilbur whips his pack off his back and throws it at the bird’s back. “Get away from him!” he screams. “Don’t touch my brother!” He scrambles at the rocks, trying to boost himself over. If he can just get there, he can fight it off. He can save Tommy.
Predators are not merciful, and the owl is no exception.
Before Wilbur can get one leg over, Tommy screams. Wilbur screams with him, loud and anguished.
Just as suddenly as it appeared, the bird disappeared; Tommy clutched in its talons, arms outstretched.

Summary
The moon bows to the horizon and stiffly Tommy unlocks his knees. His joints ache from the rigid standing. Every inch of him tensed for… something. Anything to happen.
On numb legs, freezing to the point of hardly shivering, Tommy backs away from the barrier wall. An insane laugh bubbles in his throat.
Just a story. Only just a story. Why would there be any merit to it in the first place?
He stumbles, turning his back. It’s vaguely morning now. If he’s quick, the baker on the corner might take pity on him and give him the stale extras from yesterday’s loaves.
Tommy takes a step forward, shoulders hunched and arms curled around his middle when a great boom explodes behind him.

Tommy’s lips tremble. A hiccup rises in his chest and he paws at the dirt with a hoof.
“You’re leaving me? But… the monsters…”
He can practically feel Dream’s eyes roll behind the mask. “You’re safe enough here. You always complain that you want to come down anyway. Here’s the freedom you so desperately wanted. Enjoy it.”
That’s… that’s not what Tommy meant. And Dream knows it.
“Dream,” he whimpers. “Don’t leave me alone.”
The drider turns away, walking back in the direction they came. Without a glance back.
“Dream!” Tommy screams. He bolts forward, reaching out, so close-
The rope goes taut. Blue eyes widen as he chokes and flails, vision blackening for just a moment.
When Tommy sits back up, Dream is gone.

“Hey!” Tommy shouts, grabbing the handlebar behind the driver’s seat. “Slow down! What are you-”
The words catch in his throat.
The driver’s gone. The wheel spins, petals revving, all on their own.
The bus is driving itself.
Before Tommy has time to process that– process what kind of nightmare he’s spiraling into, the dash flashes, static booms from tinny speakers from above, and a strange voice fades in, choppy at first, but growing clearer with every word.
“In today’s news, we have a story about You. No, not You, dear long-time listeners and citizens of our fair town. This is a different story about You.” The man laughs, for surely he is a man. A soothing tenor voice latches onto Tommy’s attention, drawing it forth completely, although he knew he should be panicking, attempting to stop the bus, do something.
Instead, he listens, rapt, as the voice speaks.

He focuses, bringing up his hands to guide the flood that encircles his heart. A shard within his being and soul glowing bright and hot. He dips his power into the flow of mana, sharpens it into a knife, and cuts.
A rift parts around him, and Tommy walks into The Void.

The three of them gazed at it in wonder on the water’s surface, hypnotized by the way its colors shifted faster than a cuttlefish and its silvery metallic appearance. Just like one of the human boats.
Wil swam through it on a dare. They all laughed as he darted in headfirst.
That was until he emerged on the other side, heaving and clawing at his gills in pain.
And that was only the beginning.
