Or in which there are unrequited (requited) feelings, a lot of confusion, Grace is a bad-ass, Danny has to figure himself out before he loses his chance forever, and no one is as incompetent at their jobs as canon would like us to believe.

So, Steve is planning to leave after the finale because he told Danny he loved him a year ago and Danny basically told him that he's not gay. Then Danny panicked and to keep Steve from leaving he proposes that they live together but as monogamous friends. Steve stays but is kidnapped by Dai Mei, tortured again, Danny goes crazy, Steve almost dies. They get him back, Danny realize that label don't matter and he does love Steve. Happy ending.

Danny loves Steve. Steve loves Danny, but not that way. Danny's mostly fine with that.
Well. Until people start dying and Steve might be next. Danny's emphatically not fine with that. And Steve is forced to reexamine his feelings, but hey. At least Danny does most of the talking.

Events before and after the finale. Steve is already in a bad frame of mind and during Danny's kidnapping he is unraveling. Goes after Wo Fats wife. Gets shot and recuperates with Danny. Goes to therapy and they gently get together in the end. Just angst and believable.

Steve watches the back of Danny’s head for a moment. From this distance, his hair could be as blond and full as it was ten years ago when they first met. Steve looks at the ocean – also the same – and one of the trees – a little bigger, probably – and by then he needs to get going if he doesn’t want to miss his flight.
Somehow, he drifts back to the beach anyway.
Or: Steve finds he’s not very good at leaving a certain someone behind.
