Carlos hears the bullet pass through flesh, sees the Chief’s body collapse into the dirt with a thud, blood pooling under his head. It isn’t until Campbell hits the ground that he becomes aware of his own body again: His side hurts. Inhaling is agony. It’s as if his left side is on fire. His breaths come in wheezes, but he can’t get enough air. The pain is piercing, burning, and stabbing, all at the same time. He can’t think. He can’t breathe.

He put an arm in front of himself so as not to crash into the carriage, extended fingers brushing the painted wooden side. Sweet Jesus, he might vomit onto the stones below. His vision swam from the movement, but he ignored it to put a foot on the carriage step. This proved to be a mistake: The moment his good foot ceased contact with the ground, all his weight on its injured fellow, he saw white.

Somewhere in the distance, there was a resounding crack as lightning struck a tree. William couldn’t hear it fall over his heart pounding—once, twice, three times, then a crash of thunder that he heard in his bones. His breath quickened as he scrambled under the canvas right before it began to pour. His chest felt tight, lungs straining for air. He yanked the rosary out from under his shirt and clutched it tight, wooden edges digging into his palm as he pressed it to his hammering heart. William wasn’t particularly religiously inclined, but he prayed for the storm to end all the same.

In the books, instead of falling down a hill, William ends up with a shard of wood in his arm from lightning striking a nearby tree and, well, that’d sure give me a fear of thunderstorms.

I look to the clock Rocky forged for me, my ‘Earth’ clock as it were… died a few months ago, turns out I’m not great at figuring out how to build triple A batteries! Add it to the to-do list. 11:34am.
