Summary
Slowly, he pushes back the hood of his topcoat and unclips the strap behind his head. Player 456 sits up straighter as he does, watching with intense curiosity and burning hatred. In-ho focuses hard on the man’s face, cataloguing each breath, each microexpression, determined to memorize the look on the man’s face as he reveals his treachery. Once In-ho’s eyes are uncovered, he sees the jolt of understanding hit. He watches, rapt, as a succession of shock, confusion, denial, and finally, fury, crosses the man’s face. In-ho grips the firearm still in his hand and braces again for attack, but the precaution is unnecessary. As quickly as the fury had come, it, too, went, replaced by something like resignation, like defeat. Yes, he thinks, defeat.
In-ho is determined to break player 456 by any means necessary, but as the lines between pain and pleasure begin to blur, so too do the lines between captor and captive.

“Gi-hun, please,” Young-il breathes the words into Gi-hun’s mouth, tilting his head so their lips are level. “It’s okay. My wife wouldn’t mind.”
OR: In 2023, Gi-hun meets Yuna, a woman who lost her husband to the games eight years ago. In 2024, he meets Young-il, a man who entered the games to obtain the money for his wife’s treatment. There’s more similarities between them than Gi-hun could have expected.
