Suddenly, a clawed hand grabbed Knuckles by the back of the head, pushing his face back into the dirt. It forcefully turned his head to the side, and leaned in close.
From this proximity he could now see its face.
His eyes first focused on the large fangs sticking out from its snarling lips, before trailing up to the beast’s eyes. Strangely familiar bright green eyes stared back at the echidna, seemingly studying him.
The beast leaned in closer and started sniffing him, burying its snout between his neck and shoulder to take a deep inhale of his scent. Knuckles tensed, panic creeping in. The beast licked a stripe up Knuckles’ back, between his shoulder blades, and an involuntary shiver went down his spine.

It was all pointless.

or: Shadow loses his sense of taste suddenly thanks to complications with his Black Arms DNA. During a heated fight, Shadow comes to the realisation that maybe Sonic was more use to him than he thought.
