“It’ll go fine.” Howie advised. “I don’t like the idea of you being there alone,” he joked with a small little smile. “But it’ll be okay.”
“I’m not alone.” Maddie teased with a matching smile of her own.
“You’re right.” Howie conceded. “You have our scary baby girl to hold everyone off.”
Maddie snorted. “I meant -.”
“I know what you meant.” Howie sobered. “I like the idea of him being there even less.”
Maddie’s stomach jolted. “Do you think I made a mistake?” She asked cautiously. “Should I have told him not to come?”
Howie waved a hand to the side. “Nah,” he shrugged. “We both know Buck’s going to Buck.”

Summary
Ravi figures he has to be the last one to find out, especially since he’s finding out like this. He supposes that’s what he gets for bouncing around between the A shift and the B shift so much since he’s been back at the 118, but still.
It happens like this: he had been this close! like, minutes away from printing out a new tenant lease! when the prospective renter in question calls the leasing office and mentions that she won’t be needing the 1 bed, 1 bath walk up in Faircrest Heights any more because she snagged a 2 bath loft downtown that seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
or: Ravi's landlord status makes him privy to some confidential information about the 118's finest.

“It’s just that—I died,” Buck continues, voice unsteady enough that Eddie wonders if this is the first time he’s acknowledged that out loud. “I died, and there’s so much more. There’s so much more I want to do, things I don’t even know I want to do yet, and I almost had the chance to have and live them taken away. I don’t want to die and regret missing out on everything else, Eddie.”
“So let’s make a list,” Eddie says. “Let’s do them.”
or, a bucket list that’s really about buck needing to make a change and an eddie who’s ready to do anything to see him fall in love with life again. it takes some crossing off for eddie to realise—the thing at the top of the list in his own heart? it’s been right here all along

It feels like there’s a ball of sunlight lodged behind Eddie’s rib cage. It’s humming beneath his skin, running through his bloodstream, seeping into his bones. It lights him up from the inside out, and Eddie feels so very alive whenever Buck looks at him like this - like he’s something worth looking at. Like he’s everything.
For a moment he thinks back to that night in the hospital waiting room, when Eddie was so cold that he couldn’t remember what warmth felt like.
Well. It feels an awful lot like this.
(Or, five time Eddie loves Buck by accident, and the one time he loves him on purpose.)

Summary
It’s something about the way Eddie phrases it. Something about the combination of his words and the way he’s staring down at the floor, and the flush in his cheeks and the way he’s fidgeting. Buck thinks, abruptly, he’s going to ask me on a date.
“Well I - wanted to tell you first, and I need someone to watch Chris, anyways - I know he’s getting old enough now he doesn’t like feeling like he’s got a babysitter, so I was hoping - sorry. Not the point. Uh. I have a date on Saturday.”
Just as abruptly as his own hopes had come soaring up above the cloud cover of his own unawareness - they go crashing back down to the floor - to the basement, and into the mud. “A date?” Buck rasps out.
or - the one where eddie decides to start dating again, buck figures out his own feelings just a minute too late, and then he spends a week going through the five stages of grief

“Eddie Diaz, such a considerate guest, really committing to the party theme. And here I was feeling good about coming early to help tape up the banners,” Karen grins, gesturing at the pink Valentine’s bunting above them.
“What?” Eddie repeats, this time in confusion.
“The goddamn heart-eyes, Diaz,” she laughs. “I feel like I’m interrupting something here. I’d say put 'em away, but 'tis the season, and also, I don’t think you actually could if you wanted to.”
or, a fever, a party, a late night tv show: three times eddie’s heart falls out his ass because buck keeps looking at him like that. he’s just got to find a way to tell him that doesn’t involve a convoluted cephalopod analogy about love

But when Buck tried to ask him if everything was okay with him, Eddie just said, “Me? Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?"And Buck really didn’t have an answer for that so he let it go.
Because Eddie doesn’t hide that stuff from him, anymore. Not since the day Buck broke down his bedroom door and found him sobbing in a heap on the floor.
So when Eddie says everything’s okay, Buck believes him.

Summary
Something changes in the dim light of Eddie’s kitchen, fostered by the shift in the air when their eyes meet and stay locked in the quiet of the room.
Nothing else happens that night, other than a warm hand brushed against his arm and a tired smile thrown his way before Buck leaves again. But Eddie had felt… something. It becomes impossible to ignore in the echo of Buck’s sudden absence, but in the space where fear would normally tangle its roots into his ribcage there are flowers tentatively blooming instead. There is sunlight bleeding through his skin even as the night sky provides a dark backdrop beyond his living room windows.
It feels safe, this almost-revelation sitting on the tip of his tongue, not quite ready to spill past his lips.
(Or, Buck keeps falling asleep on Eddie's couch. Eddie doesn't know what else to do but love him through it.)

“You’re my best friend,” Buck says.
The smile that Eddie gives him is so soft, so achingly tender, that it makes Buck feel too big for his skin. It makes him want to crack his chest open - pluck out his heart and hand it to Eddie for safekeeping.
You’re the one who brought it back to life. It’s yours now - it’s always been yours.

Summary
“Two whole days, huh?” Eddie asks with fond amusement as he folds the last of Christopher’s clean shirts, stacking it neatly in the laundry basket.
“Eddie,” Buck groans, his voice a little gruff with just the quietest tinge of nauseous that tells him that Buck probably hasn’t had anything to eat yet, “how am I supposed to distract myself for two days if I can’t talk to anyone or scour the internet from the comfort of my own bed.”
“You do know you have a laptop, right?” Eddie hums, the phone carefully tucked against his shoulder and his ear as he maneuvers to Christopher’s room to put the clothes away.
“Fine,” Buck relents, “I have a laptop, but you know that doesn’t solve the can’t talk to anyone problem.”
[or Buck can't use his phone for two days. Eddie sends him text anyways]

He wakes up with Eddie's arm thrown over his waist.
There's a pit in his stomach as soon as he opens his eyes, because the alarm is on again, the same radio station, the same song. The sunlight streaming into the room is buttery-soft, brand new because it's early. The alarm is ringing so they can take Chris to school. And—
He reaches out for the bedside table on his side of the bed they share, clumsily unplugs his phone one-handed. The screen lights up to a familiar wallpaper, and it's right there, just above the top of Buck's head: Wednesday.

Summary
“Most babies are born as accidents,” She says suddenly, like she’s decided that Buck has passed, that she can trust him with this.
Buck doesn’t really have an answer because that question hits way to fucking close to home. A year or so ago he would have said, yes, I was an accident, so I know how that goes, but Buck knows better now. Knows that he would almost give anything for that answer to still be yes. Evie’s finger works under the seal to rip it open, a stack of important looking papers dumping out onto the table in front of her.
“Not me,” she says without looking up as she organizes them into a neat stack, “I was engineered.”
And.
And Buck’s pretty fucking sure a giant, cataclysmic hole has ripped right open, dragging him down to the earth’s core where he vaporizes into dust.

Summary
Buck is the incredibly kind but incredibly straight bartender at Eddie's local gay bar. Eddie is trying very, very hard not to be pathetically in love with him, and is failing miserably.
“Hey, you’re back,” Buck had said, greeting him with that sun-bright grin, and Eddie had yet again been reminded why he’d started questioning his sexuality.
“Well, I get one night off a week. And tonight I could really use the drink.”
Buck’s brow had furrowed, and he got Eddie his favorite beer without even asking again what it was. “You need to talk about it? Assuming I read you right and you’re the kind of guy who talks to a bartender instead of a therapist.”
Eddie had winced theatrically. “Ouch. That obvious, huh?”
“Hey, man, you’re the one that told me you started coming here on your coworker’s advice. Feels like something you’d get from a therapist, if you had one.”

“Oh,” Greg says, his face falling, “that’s Lucifer.”
Buck lets out something between a laugh and a cough.
“Lucifer,” he repeats.
“It's a long story,” Greg says, tugging on the collar of his polo, his name tag clinking. “He's—not exactly well socialized, and he really, really hates—“ he starts, except he’s interrupted by Eddie’s voice, the first words Buck has heard him say since they dropped Chris off at Hen and Karen's.
“Hi,” Eddie says, crouching right under the bright red sign – which, now that Buck’s close enough to read it, says DO NOT PET – and reaching his fingers toward the bars.
“—men,” Greg finishes, his voice weak, frozen mid-step like he’s not sure if he should be hauling Eddie away while there’s still time. “He hates men. Usually.”

Summary
Eddie’s been back at work for about two weeks—his time after quitting had passed in a seemingly idyllic week of spending time with his son which got rudely interrupted by a full-scale mental breakdown that ended with tears and hugs and Buck lovingly bullying him into going to therapy again. Then therapy had brought even more tears and confusion and slowly ballooning financial concerns that culminated in Eddie undertaking the frankly painful process of reapplying to the LAFD and completing an equally painful remedial training course.
And everything was fine until—Eddie started having a problem.
