Summary
It seems like they defeated the Anuk-ite a lifetime ago, despite the fact that it has only been a few hours.
Being with Stiles is like that— the universe fades out, the outside world becomes irrelevant, and time seems to slide by unprohibited. Lydia is perfectly willing to let it happen, instead cherishing every second she can spend wrapped up in Stiles’s arms before he has to go back to Virginia and she has to go to Boston.
“Did you get registration figured out?” Stiles asks, kissing her hair. She nods against his chest, comfortably nestled into his lap as he leans back against the headboard of her bed.
“Apparently the fact that I have an IQ of 170 was enough for them to let me register late,” she says, her head tucked under his chin. “I claimed I had a family emergency.”
“I guess that’s one way to put it,” Stiles says, raising his eyebrows.

“Hey Stiles.” Good start. It doesn’t sound like he’s dead, dying, maimed or running for his life. “Uh, I- we...could actually use your help.”
(...Or maybe he was being too optimistic).
(More cats died from wishful thinking than curiosity ever killed, he’s sure).
A part of his life will always and forever be tied to Beacon Hills; to the school and the preserve; the burned remains of the Hale house and the cold lit parking lot of the animal clinic. He’s tied there with spilled blood and stolen keys, lacrosse games and black eyes, his father’s badge in an ice bath and road flares in the rain.
He grew up though. Got in his mother’s Jeep and drove away like so many people told him to.
Sitting at his work desk in this cosy little apartment as the sun starts to dip outside and burn the walls in shades of gold...Stiles doesn’t want to be dragged back there.
And yet.
And yet.
(He does a little).Or: It's late in 2021 and Stiles hasn't been back to Beacon Hills since they chased Monroe out six years ago, but they knew she was still out in the world with an agenda, and it could finally be time to head back to see this through.

Summary
“You once told me that death isn’t about you. It’s about the people you leave behind,” she reminisces with tears in her eyes. She’s desperate, pleading. Stiles, for once, suddenly wishes she didn’t pay any heed to his words back then. “Don’t make me the one left behind.”
For the first time since this whole debacle started, Stiles understands her. He understands her more than he’d like to admit. He thinks about if their situations were reversed, and he was in her position. He too would do anything to protect her. He only wishes she loved him just a little bit less, so he could selfishly spend the rest of his days with her. Instead, he’s standing in front of a small woman with more love in her heart — for him, and only him — than he ever could’ve anticipated.
So, stupidly, he lets her go.
