His lips unstick hurriedly, not willing to show how startled he was at being called back to the conversation directly. Junhui always complained when he did that, checked out of a dialogue because he'd gotten too caught up in the finer, abstract points of whatever he deemed more important than the man in front of him. “Am I supposed to pick your memories out of a hat? You’ve been fifty times, at this point.”
Junhui still throws his whole head back, Adam's apple bobbing, when he laughs. “Half a dozen at best, don't exaggerate. The one from back when we were dating, I meant.”
No matter how many years pass, the feeling of Junhui pulling the rug out from under his feet is unforgettable and just as familiar.
The opening bracket of Junhui's career is this; he breaks up with Minghao unceremoniously, on a Tuesday, and books his breakout Vogue cover issue two weeks later. At the closing bracket, Minghao stands in the dressing room of his last show.

His hands feel clammy, skin feverish and heated, there’s a sharp pooling warmth deep in his belly, and he —
He blinks down at himself.
"Hao," Junhui starts slowly, licks his lips once, then again when he registers how dry they feel, Minghao's eyes flicker back to him, visibly trying to determine whether he was about to say anything worthwhile, "Hao, I think it’s — it was an aphrodisiac."
It takes a minute, but Junhui watches the realisation click into place in real time on Minghao's face. His frantic worry replaced with a terrifying blankness that has Junhui huffing a laugh, despite himself. Despite the situation he's in.
"I'll kill them," he says softly and it sounds like a promise to himself, more than anything.
"Right, sure," Junhui agrees with no fight, because there's no helping anything when Minghao gets like this.
It's probably wise to tell your long time work partner and best friend you have feelings for him before he agrees to obligatorily fuck you — but, like most other important things in his life, Junhui just figures Minghao already knows.
