Annabeth was the first to break the moment, nudging Percy lightly with her elbow. “Come on,” she said, eyes flicking toward the beer pong table. “If Jake can embarrass himself that badly, we can at least try.”
Percy laughed. “You say that like Clarisse isn’t going to destroy us.”
Almost on cue, Clarisse’s voice cut through the clearing. “Jackson,” she called, already on her feet. “You and Wise Girl up for the next round, or are you just here to spectate?”
Chris followed her, grabbing a couple of cups and lining them up with practiced ease. He shot Percy an apologetic look that did nothing to hide his grin. “House rules,” he said. “No mercy.”
Annabeth’s eyes lit up, competitive instinct kicking in immediately. “Fine,” she said, stepping forward. “But we get first throw.”Or the Head Counselors actually get to be Counselors as the last few weeks of the summer wind down.

It wasn’t like Annabeth to walk around without her little guard dog by her side - something apparent from watching every capture the flag game since the Sea Twerp came to camp.

The air is heavy with death and further savagery that awaits them.
Nat seemingly only wants it to be over, this moment, this day, maybe even her life. She drops her pants with ease, swiftly and without any shame, leaving her lower half only in those poor strings of fabric they wash more carefully among the collective laundry of shared clothes.
Mari crouches in front of her, in her hands already a mug, a rag, and a small pot, she pushes Nat’s clothes out of her way and starts wetting her feet, washing away grime from the callouses where their cleats gave up against the wild terrain.
