It was rather surprising, then, when the quest against the brimmed caps that had led him to the Forest of Thristas, ended by being ambushed by his friends. It was funny how that worked: in the end, Qifrey was saved not by his anger, but by the ones around him.

“Oh, Olly,” he says, his voice thick with emotion—the kind Olruggio has long since learned to ignore. It has become so familiar that it takes him a moment to recognize it now. So it comes as a surprise when Qifrey lifts a hand to his cheek, gently brushing his thumb across it.
Olruggio remembers what it is like to love Qifrey. It is in moments like these, when there is no oxygen left in his lungs, that he doesn't need to hold himself back, because any words would be nothing more than wind on his lips. He cannot let Qifrey hear them.

""Something to hopefully ease the pain.." Qifrey whispers as he runs one hand along Olruggio's cheek and sweeps the hair from his friend's forehead with the other. "Are you with the living?" He teases.
Olruggio's body seems very much to protest the action, but with great effort he forces his eyes open, meeting Qifrey's own.
All his body's prior hesitance is gone in an instant as Olruggio's eyes open wide as saucers. His face breaks out into a faint scarlet, warm to the touch and reaching the tips of his ears.
"Whooa!" Olruggio slurs, reaching upwards to hold Qifrey's face with both hands. "You're beautifulll!"
Oh dear."

Olruggio knows it's not the same, knows the harbor is miles and years from Noz. And yet. And yet.
The specifics are lost to him–which twists and turns brought him here, how far away he’s run from the harbor, what finally buckled his knees and brought him down to meet the cool stone of a narrow alley.

“We do have a budget. A budget is just—” But he had already lost control of the conversation.

Olruggio never made a big deal about the money his specialized commissions got him. They got what they needed, and some extra at that. To the others, however, it is quite a revelation.

Qifrey startled, his eye darting briefly to Olruggio before flicking away, focusing on a loaf of bread left forgotten on the counter. "Forget about it," he said quickly, voice low, "I made it awkward. I always do."
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. You have a silver tongue, if anything.” Qifrey chuckled a little bit at that.
Olruggio hesitated, then shrugged, trying for nonchalance but failing utterly. "If you want the truth… I wouldn’t mind if we did more than just talk about politics."

“Olly?” Qifrey asks and knocks one final time, but still no answer. “Olly, I’m coming in.” He announces after no reply and crosses through the hallway connecting the buildings together over to Olruggio’s living space.
He sets down the basket on a table, glancing around the quiet room looking for any signs of life from his friend, only to receive still no answer. Nothing seemed to be out of order, just the usual chaotic mess of Olruggio’s quarters with supplies sitting around.
Finally taking the last few steps, he reaches the watchful eye’s work room and finds him: asleep at his desk, leaning forward hunched over upon folded arms. His hair is askew, most likely from running his fingers too often in frustration, but when Qifrey’s eyes unabashedly roam the man’s body, he spots one hand bandaged up.

Summary
The stress of caring for the girls kept him in check most days. The stress that hung over his head every time he looked at Olruggio and every time he saw their swapped tassel and ribbon kept him in check most days.
But some days, it was too easy to be comfortable. The girls smiled and played, their laughter filling the air. Olruggio would rest his hands on his back and let them linger and he’d need to fight how much he wanted to lean into the touch.
Some days, it was simply too much, and he had to manage himself to make sure he doesn’t feel too much comfort.
